Hi.

For curiosity sake, I'm wondering on how The rifling on my svt looks. Worn? Decent? This gun has devoured around 4k rounds. All be it probably more.
Hopefully someone can tell from my craptastic pics. Thanks.

It looks good to me. It certainly shows signs of use because the lands look less sharp compaqred to say a brand new rifle.
I can't quite tell from the picture but I'd call it a 6/10 condition.
Some key areas are the throat and crown of the barrel.
If these areas look as good as the rest the rifle should still shoot good.

...your rifling looks good...however it takes better equipment to look at the throat of your rifle, which is equally, if not more important...had a 7mm that i loaded very hot all the time...somewhere around 2,500 rounds the groups started opening up until it became spread all over the target...turned out being that the throat was burned out...wound up rebarreling the gun...the rifling still looked good...you need a bore scope to inspect throating...but if you are getting decent groups then not to worry unless you want to have it checked out...

best

Please educate me on how one assesses the crown of a barrel which has a flash hider? thanks!

Its easier to get a picture of the rifling if you shine a light at the bolt head and then the bolt head reflects that light down the barrel. The light is not so intense that you can't get a good shot. The 7.62x54r isn't a very hot round so you can probably get another four thousand out of it no problem. Plus, these old military guns seem to last a lot longer than anything new. I've seen Lee Enfields you could consider the barrel shot out and it still shoots 1.5" 3 shot groups at 100 meters.

If the bullet's go where you aim, then it's good enough. But if your getting pie sized group's at 50 yds then there's something wrong.

If it shoots poorly it may be an indication of warn rifling.

But really? Slug and measure your bore. Avoid any and all information from people who think they can assess rifle wear by simply looking at a picture on the internet.
