this may be a newbie question but I have been given a 303 british rifle from my grandfather. I was wondering how u tell its a #1,2,3,4,5 MK 1,2,3 etc. i believe it was "bubbaed" as u call it but not sure how bad.
Markings on it say Enfiled 1917 SmtLE 111 lots of other crazy markings. it has no magazine and there is a scope mount on it. Were does one find a magazine for it and how much should I expect to pay? Any help would b much appreciated

From the markings you mentioned, I believe it is a No. 1 Mk3 but I could be mistaken. The scope mount is almost certainly an addition by a later owner (aforementioned 'bubba' :D ) so the value of the rifle is significantly reduced. Doesn't mean it won't shoot great though! Here are some Enfield sites to peruse for more info:

The best place to find a magazine would be placing a WTB on the Exchange forum. I am sure someone has one for ya. In addition, Marstar have some Enfield parts for your Enfield:

I think Marstar is out of the No1Mk3 mags but you should call to check. Mags can be had on eBay every once in a while too. Don't pay anymore than $35 for a mag.

I have a few pictures on my web site if you want to check it out. I'm still building the how to identify your enfield page but it's comming. Lost of other good info and links too though.

Sounds like you have a No1 MkIII* 1917 manufacture, made in the RSAF Enfield Factory, Magazines for these run around $35-$45,and can be identified by the longer rib on the back.

If you can post some pictures, is the scope mount tapped and drilled directly into the reciever, top mount, side mount, other......
