I've only had my SKS out 2 times and after each time I just run a few patches soaked in winded down the barrel, and wipe the bolt, fire pin, inside the mag, then follow with a gun solvent then oil it up. Is this good enough or should I be doing it a different way?

If I am shooting surplus ammo, as soon as I get home I will field strip the rifle and run all metal components under hot tap water. Then clean with solvents and oil. There are lots of versions out the on how to clean your SKS, the way I do it has served me well. Does not take more than 20-30 minutes.

so do you run the trigger group? bolt? and then the actual barrel under hot water in the tub? Then wouldn't you have to spray with wd40 or something to get the water out of every nook and cranny?

Don't forget your gas tube...what you are doing does sound sufficient, but a cheaper easier method some people do is just pour boiling hot water down the barrel, which dissolves pretty much all the salt. Then you can proceed to your oiling

ok i'll let it sit 5-10 min next time, i just wipe it off pretty much right after wiping it down with windex, mind you its really dry up here in the yukon.

When I had a SKS, I used to spray some Black Powder cleaner right down it, at the range or outside as soon as I was done. That really cleaned stuff up right away. Then when I got home I pretty much just cleaned it like a normal gun.

Field strip SKS. Boil a kettle of water. Pour hot water on bolt, down gas tube, and down barrel, (and basically on all remaining small metal parts if you are anal like me, as it doesn't take any more time). shake everything off. The heat with dry the residual water in a few seconds. clean and oil as normal.
