How far you shootin ya whelens?

hey whelen owners out there, how far are you typically taking shots on game and with what gr loads?

just curious as i got suckered in to a long shot i proberky shouldnt have taken with the RN.225gr .35Whelen rather the Short Mag.

I don't have a .35 Whelen, but my self-imposed limit with the 9.3x62 is 250 yards with 286 grs, and 300 with 250's. More a reflection of the thick conditions I hunt in than limitations on the cartridge. I've got no where to practice over 300, and I won't shoot beyond that.

I was checking out your pics in the other thread btw, looks like you've got pretty good hunting down there. Your gun laws sound worse than ours, or it would be tempting to move.

I believe that most Whelen shooters limit themselves to under 225 yards because they acknowledge the superiority of the 9.3x62 (.360 Wagner).

My longest shot with a .35 Whelen was only 250 yards, not lasered and on a pronghorn doe. Back then I only had 2 big game rifles and my wife was using my .270. I seldom use the Whelen anymore, since at the ranges that the "poormans .375" is great at, the real .375 does just fine. For everything else I like my speed.

I stay under 200 with either 200 Hornady RN's (for deer) or 250 Hornady RN's (moose).
Kind'a simplified though ... it's rare to see most anything past 75 yards or so it's so thick!

My comfort zone with either Whelen, or 9.3X62, or 338-06 is 250 yds. or under preferably well under and in truth that covers most of my other rifles as well. I save my long range shots for punching paper..

It depends entirely on what platform you are shooting it from... I have a break action 20" barreled Whelen and have it rigged as a "brush gun" with a low power optic... I shoot the 250 SP-RP from that gun. I also have a heavy contour 24" barreled bolt action 700 platform that is a 300+ gun with the 200 AB's and more horsepower in the optics... You can load it up with a lighter, high BC bullet and flatten it out considerably... If you are intent on tossing 250 RN's, then it is prudent to also accept the limitations.

I would be comfortable to shoot up to 300 yds with my Whelen and 225gr TSX.
