how fast can I push a 65gr bullet out of .223?

Don't have a chrony and would like to shoot 65gr Gameking for long range coyotes... using varget or BLC2. 22'' barrel.

Check the Hogdon powder site. They didn't have a 65grn listed but this is pretty close:

I was getting 3100 fps from my 69g SMK in a 26" Remington 700PSS using 26g of Varget. You'll be a couple hundred slower with the shorter barrel.

Remember to work up your loads ... they might be more accurate at a lower speed.

I have the sierra 5 suite program, but it does not have data for the 65gr gameking.
I emailed sierra, they told me to use the data fot the 63gr bullet if this is any help.

What is the rate of twist in your barrel? What's your idea of longer range? It's easier to help w/ more info.

Well longer range would be 400-600 yards at most, that's why i'm looking at heavier bullets to do the job better. Of course, at those range you need to know bullet drop anyway, but just want to get the most out of the caliber, accuracy has been good with pretty much every load. twist is 1 in 9''

Remember that you'll need an accurate range to get the correct amount of drop at those distances. Wanna buy a rangefinder??

If your tube is a 1-9", I'd be tempted to try the 75 amax. It may or may not stabilize, but if it foes, it will buck wind really well, and expands like a varmint bullet. Most folks can get 2950 fps out of a .223 with the amax. I like R15 and Varget. Others report good results w/ n540 and h335. I can't comment on the 65gr. bullet you are speaking about, except to say I tend to lean toward higher BC bullets. I might compare it's bc to the 60 vmax. I bet they are close.

Already have a rangefinder needed at those distance for sure.

As for the amax, i've tried a matchking once a a big coon and it didn't expand at all... not sure about the amax though

AMAX are supposed to work pretty good for hunting whereas the MatchKings are really bad. I used a few 69g SMK's on gophers, there was no difference in effect between the SMK's and FMJ's.

Only if it's a Remington do you need to worry about shrapnel.

That plastic tip on the amax never got the memo that it's on a match bullet, and not a vmax. Expansion is , um, effective.

I should then consider hornady match bullets for varmints work!! I know I can shoot them well out of pretty much every rifle i've shot them in!!

The amax seem to work quite nicly on varmints. I wouldn't count on the hpbt's to come apart reliably. I've just ordered a 1-8" tube to build a walking .22-250. I plan on shooting 75 amax and 62 TSX out of it almost exclusivly. Should make crows and coyotes come apart at rather long-ish range.
