How flat for leverguns?

round nose should work but there is a new alternative hornady lever evolution
soft point ammo for levers new powder and better speed they claim good for up to 300 yrds.
 
Round nose is not "out" but you need to look in to each situation. ie whether or not that .308 round nose bullet is designed to work safely in a 30-30. Or not.

Thanks for replies. My question is aimed at 38/357 levers, like the Marlin 1894C. I like the idea of cheap 38 for plinking, but it may be safer to restrict it to flatpointed or hollow stuff. Never had a tube fed rifle, so I don't know where the safety line is for the tips. A few "round nose" loads look too pointy for comfort.
 
i use swcs in my 44 - i think as long as you're not going to a point and presenting the primer in front with a hard pointy surface, you should be fine- round nose should be ok and jhps ( factory ammo comes in jhp btw)feed fine
 
I once bought a couple of boxes of Speer 150gr/.308" RN thinking I could use them in my 30/30. Upon consulting Speer, they strongly advised me not to use them in a tube magazine rifle.

SO, TO RECAP ................... Not all RNs are suitable for tube mags. :D

.358 bullets can be loaded in a 357/38. For example the 180 grain Hornady SS Pistol bullet or 200 Spire point.

They wouldn't be good in a tube unless loaded singly and unlikely to expand much.
 
I guess anyone who has learned anything about guns and shooting has learned not to use pointed bullets point to primer in a tube magazine.

However, is this a REAL PROVEN danger? Has anyone ever herd of a test where pointed bullets were loaded in a tube mag. and the recoil of shooting it really did cause a magazine round discharge?

Just wondering if this is a "popular mith" like "brush busting cartridges".

I've read of a number of tests that failed to detonate a primer in the tube mag. And also, one that purposely detonated a round in the mag, and did not set off the rest.
That said, using pointed bullets in a tube is asking for trouble.
