How Game Animals See & Smell by Kurt von Besser

More then once I have had Deer walk right past me within 20' while I sat on a tree stump wearing HiViz Green, and Orange (the stuff tree fallers wear).

They smelled me long before they saw me as soon as the wind changed direction, and even then they still waited until I moved.

Yup, happens sometimes. Just like a human can walk into a very smelly place, and, thinking about something else, not notice it for some time.
Or, as I've done twice, have a hunter walk right up to me, while I'm dressed in blaze orange coveralls, and not see me, until I spoke.

On the other hand, if the deer is on edge, you won't even know he spotted/smelled you.
