I maybe trading for a 12ga pump witha 24" rifled barrel, how far is would this be good for? would used mainly in the bush, but there spots where a 100yd shot could happen some spots are further

drugs are fantastic man. they will make you feel like a superman when u want and when you dont want that they will make you feel like a total fcuk up. its all up to you in what you want from them.

My slugs are 1 1/4 oz lyman cast slug. I flipped my bear over on it's side at about 40 yards. In one side and guts out the other.

I would not be afraid to shoot out to 100 yards. Make sure you practice to see what the drop is going to be.

A rifled shotgun barrel only shoots saboted slugs. They are quite accurate out to 100 yards or so, fast drop in energy and speed after that. They don't all shoot equal in all guns. Try several brands to be sure you're getting the most out of yours.

You can expect 3 to 4 inch groups or less at 100 with a smooth bore and slugs. Some rifled barrels will shoot 2 inch groups at 100. You have to be using ammo the shotgun likes though.

You can shoot lead slugs in a rifled barrel but it will foul badly. Sabot slugs have several advantages: less fouling, better ballistic coefficient due to the smaller diameter, better shaped projectile, and in some cases less recoil. Even so, not all slug loads shoot well in all barrels. I doubt that you should expect better than minute of deer accuracy at 100 from most pump guns with randomly selected ammo, rifled barrel or not. IIRC, claims of 200 yard slug accuracy came from quality bolt actions from Browning, Savage, and Tarhunt.

Rio star and challenger slugs are able to be fired in both rifled and smooth bore and are very accurate. Tjey are not saboted so they make a big hole. If you can find them try brenneke gold 3" mag slugs. They're 600 grains of awesome for rifled barrels only. Thay group very well to a 150 yards. Right on at 50 yards they drop 8" or so at 150

You are definitlely good to 100 yds plus some. You have received alot of good advise from these fellas. The most imortant piece being to try many different types of slugs in the gun to see what it likes best.

I have a Rem 870 with rifled barrel, and a Browning BPS with smooth barrel. Rem in 22", BPS in 24. With Challenger slugs, the BPS will do a ragged one hole group at 50 yds. 2 years ago, I shot a buck at 68 paces with the BPS. Instant kill. All things considered, I think I prefer the BPS smoothie over rifled - cheaper slugs, more choice, can use buckshot, etc.

I tried my 870 with a 14" dlask barrel benched @ 100 yards, I was running out of ammo at that point but with a little hold over (about 6"), I kept 3 slugs within 8" of each other in a triangular shape. The Dlask barrels(or at least mine) will shoot Remington foster stlye slugs well also. My other barrel, which is an express / rem choke 20" smooth bore with rifle sights, will not shoot the Remington fosters worth a damn through it. The long and short of it is you have to test some different brands to see what she likes. ;)
