Think of the Stevens as a PreAccutrigger Savage because that's what it is.
All Savage aftermarket (which is now the equal of the Rem) will fit on the Stevens. If you want bare basic and don't mind a relatively heavy but crisp trigger, bed the Stevens and you are sailing.
If you want a lighter trigger (1.5lbs) and possibly some mag options, go with the Savage. The Accutrigger is superb and the new dmag amazing. Stocks are the same and need the same work. The difference in price is pretty much the same as an aftermarket trigger but I prefer the Accutriggers extra safety features for a field rifle.
If you eventually want to build a custom rifle and will change many parts, the Stevens is a superb donor action.
I just picked up a Stevens 223 which will become the basis for a Tactical rifle build - poor mans AI.
I will keep the orig parts for a hunting/varmint rifle so the action will serve dual roles. That is the best part of these rifles. They are so easily modified, you can use them in many different ways without spending a fortune.
They certainly benefit from a bit of work smoothing up the trigger, bolt and stock. however, once done, they run as well as some really expensive rigs.
