Mosins

Mosins are built like tractors with something added: ruggedness... ;)
They aren't the most elegant design or the most scopable but they never were originally intended for this.
The first contract Mosins (Chatellerault, Remington, New England Westinghouse) and the ones made in Russia were subjected to extremely stringent tolerance requirements. Usual test was to take 10 rifles, measure them then strip them to the parts, mix them and rebuild the rifles with the mixed parts. Every rifle had to pass the measurement and gauging test afterwards. This insured that field armorers could refurb disabled rifles very easily even on the battlefield.
If you need a short and very well made design, try to find one of the Polish M-44. Their fit and finish is second to none and they make a good little carbine for hunting the wooded areas; folding bayonet is for storage: you simply stick them into the ground near the front door of the shack after the hunt... ;)
If you need something to shoot field and have good eyesight, an M-91 or M-91/30 can fill the bill. Or a Finn M-39, if you can luck on one.
Of course, you'll catch Mosinitis in the process and find yourself with many "old ugly rifles" very quickly! :)
PP.

Just received an M44 from P&S Militaria - great people to deal with. $185.00 delvered to Vancouver.
Was very impressed with the condition of the rifle, very clean, literally "new".
Fired off a few rounds yesterday at the cabin, packs a bit of a punch but not too bad. Put a butt pad on for now. Very loud ! Smooth action.
Cheap ammo, cheap fun.
Get one.

I've had my M44 Polish for 15yrs now (bought it in the day when you could get new unissued ones still). Works flawlessly, cheap ammo, accurate. Five of my friends ended up rushing to buy some of these for themselves after we went for a shoot. Like others said, the Nagant is a great milsurp rifle, you won't regret getting one.

Hi Guys, one more point about the Moisin Nagant rifes that support how good they are. They have the distinction of being the "longest in service" military rifle of any made. First issued in 1891 and still in service during the war in Vietnam. I don't doubt that they are still being used in a few places on planet earth. Very robust and engineered to work every time. Regards, Bill

in nock down power/ballistics 7.62x54 the nagant round is pretty much the same as our good old 30-06 round.............i have had a few over the yrs currently got a m-91/39 dated 1925..............(converted -shortened).....i hope to get a better m91/39 with round recieve to make a sniper using original scope and mount..........

I have a redone 1891/30 Mosin Nagant from S.I.R Mailorder (http://www.sirmailorder.com/, call them, it's not listed on the site). It's got a laminate stock, round receiver (for mounting scopes) and very good bore and crown quality. It's only $150, and if you're looking to use it for hunting, buy one of these. They aren't worth anything to a collector as the receiver stamps usually don't match and they have redone stocks and such, but if you're looking for a hunting rifle, buy one from S.I.R. The rifles get handpicked by their supplier and it should get to you in about 2 weeks.

Scoping a 91/30:
If you're looking to scope it, get the Brownell's Nagant scope mount (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/st...12785&title=MOSIN+NAGANT+MILITARY+SCOPE+MOUNT). This mount lets you use standard Weaver rings to mount any scope you want on the rifle (I think it comes to about $135 shipped, I'm getting a Nikon Monarch 6x42 from S.I.R for $336 Can, which is also an outstanding price, not to mention an outstanding scope). Also, you'd need a turned down (flush) bolt to clear the scope, which can be found at http://buymilsurp.com/store/cart.php?cat=Mosin+Nagant+Rifle+Parts (it's the Mosin Nagant Sporter Bolt Body, 11 products from the top).

Hope this helps! I'm doing the same project myself.

I would have thought that the Lee was actually the longest serving military bolt action... First issued in 1888, and still in use today?

Admittedly, there have been a few "evolutions" in the design since the first Lee Metfords, but OUR Northern Ranger Units are still issued Lee Enfields, India still issues them, and I'm sure a few others, too.

But, no doubting that the Mosins are one heck of a tough rifle!

Merry Christkwaanzikah!
