How hard is it to mount a scope on a gun ? I'll be picking up my new BLR 81' tomorrow and I'm want to mount a scope on the gun with "peep sight" rings, so that I can use the iron sights for stalking/drives, and scope for long range shots. I've never mounted a scope on a gun before so I don't know what I would need. I've spoken to a few places and the price for them to do it is in the $25 to $30. Is that price reasonable, and is it that hard ? I may also get them to bore sight it for me also, so all I have to do is go out to range and sight it in to my liking. Please let me know and thank you for your help.
 
Installing scope mounts is easy. Each guy here has their own method, but the end result is the same. There just a couple of things to Keep in mind.

1) Degrease all the rings, screws, tapped screw holes before mounting.
2) Don't over tighten the screws (example: tightening the screw with the long end of the allen key/torx key or white knuckle tightening with a screw driver). If your clenching your teethwhile tightening the screws, it's probably to tight. ;)

Some people use a tiny bit of blue loctite for the base screws just to make sure it doesn't back out. Some say it not necessary some live by it. I say it doesn't hurt to use some as insurance.

Do yourself a favor and skip the see through mounts,they mount the scope far too high to get a proper cheek position on the stock,and they aren't as sturdy as a good quality low mount.If you learn to use a scope properly,you can be faster and more precise with a low powered scope than with open sights.
 
It is worth the extra effort to lap the rings in, it is quite telling to see the patterns when you are lapping. You will be guaranteed not to induce strange stresses in the tube of the scope and will also reduce the chances of leaving marks on the tube.
 
You don't need to switch between a scope and iron sights if you use a variable power scope that can go down to 1-1.5X magnification. As it is, the stock of the BLR isn't really the best for cheek weld with a low mounted scope. With see through rings, you would end up with more of a "chin weld".

I have both reg scope rings and bases from Weaver along with the Weaver see thru mounts. Both sets are pretty much the exact same height. When I do it hopefully this weekend I'm going to try both sets of rings out with the 3200 scope I got this weekend. Thanks guys for all your help and tips. I'll let you know how I make out.
