How high does a scope need to be mounted to clear my front sights?

Howdy guys,

I'm about to order some stuff for my AR and I want to make sure it'll work before I pull the trigger and order it all.

I just ordered a new fore end and my AR will look like This

Basically an M4 style AR with flat top rails but it still has the front tower sight.

I plan on mounting this scope on my AR.

Here's my issue, I'm having a hard time finding canadian retailers that carry an easy way to mount this on my rifle which will be high enough to clear my front sight.

If somebody could show me how they would go about mounting this scope that would be a great help.

Thanks

^^^ misanthropist is correct.

You want to keep the scope in line with your eye when 'shouldering' the rifle in your natural shooting position. Mounts high enough to clear the front sight would have you raising your head away from and out of your natural position.

Look at the likes of LaRue and ADM mounts typically used on AR's, they are all basically manufactured at the same height to keep the scope close to the rail and in line with your eye, but yet still clear a mounted rear folding sight.

I use an ACOG TA31 (4 X) on my one AR. The ACOG is mounted low on the rail and is in line with the front sight tower and I can only see a faint hint of the sight if I look for it. When shooting at a target I don't really see it.

This photo shows where is sits:

I have a 2.5 - 10 X 24 NF scope (which is approx. the same as the 1 x 4 your are considering) sitting in an ADM Socom mount on my other AR. At 2.5 I can see the tower if I look for it, but again, when shooting I don't really notice it as my eye is focused on the target.

Here is a photo showing where is sits relative to the rail and the rear folding sight:

If you want to go with rings, I'd contact Wolverine to see what ring height they would suggest using to mount the scope, or a member on here may post up what they are using.
However, IMO, if you can afford it, for an AR, go with a one piece mount like a LaRue or ADM. LaRue mounts are costly, however you can sometimes pick up a used ADM on the EE for not much more than a good set of rings. Come to think of it, I may even have a new spare ADM mount sitting in my safe!

PM me if you have any questions.

Merry Christmas to all CGN'ers.

Do not use traditional rings for mounting any scope on an AR upper if the rings do no both fit on the upper receiver.

Do not mount one ring on the upper, and one on the railed hadguard.

There is a reason why they manufacture one piece mounts for ARs.

If you mount the scope and find that the front sights bother you, and they may, despite them not bothering others, change out the front A-frame sight/gasblock for either a folding front sight/gas block such as the PRI, or get a low profile gas block, and a front BUIS mounted to the handguard.

Be aware though, that a barrel mounted front sight will be more accurate than a front sight mounted to a freefloat handguard due to the handguard flexing.

Regards.

Hey guys thanks for the replys.

I dont plan on using the front sight just removing it is way too big of a project for me right now.

Im definitely going to going with a one piece system im just having a hard time navigating these sponsors if someone can point me to one that would be great.
