how i chose my first handgun

I love all of Hickok45's gun videos, but I went for a different approach.

Since I didn't know anyone personally who shoots handguns, and knowing that the guys at the gun counter would get annoyed with me asking to hold every single gun, I called my brother in Calgary. My brother's friend has over 65 firearms so I asked my brother to go check them all out. My brother and I are physiologically similar with same sized hands etc, so I thought this would be a good approach. He said that the Sigs felt best in his hand. I checked out the Sig P229 and asked my brother to ask his friend about it. His friend said it was his favourite shooter in 9mm so he highly recommended it. So I bought it and love it!

If you don't have a brother or know someone that shoots my strategy won't work. But this my story. There are 101 ways to discover what you like. Mine was just a strange approach thinking of physiological similarities. We all have five appendages on our hands but all of us will be differently proportioned. This will likely influence your purchasing decision the most. Just because something looks nice doesn't mean it will be perfect for your hand. With 1911's you can order slimmer grips. With many polymer guns there are inserts to adjust for length of trigger pull. The most trouble I've had is with revolvers. Although they are my favourite shooters, I have always had to order new grips, and eventually I will order custom grips cut specifically for my hand. Those lessons in kindergarten for tracing your hand will finally pay off big time when ordering custom woods for your best revolvers! And once I get just the right cut grips for my N frames, I will send the grip back and ask the company to do two more!
