How is Dillon for shipping to Canada?

The reason I'm asking is I'm planning on ordering some stuff from them:

  • RL550B Video Instruction Manual
  • 9mm 3-Die Set
  • RL550/XL650/AT500 Strong Mount
  • Bullet Puller
  • Lyman's Reloading Handbook

All counted its going to be about $165USD before shipping. Anything else I should be looking at for reloading 9mm? I only have the 550 press (so far). Should I be getting this stuff from Dillon or should I go through a place like TSE in Calgary and have it shipped to Red Deer from there?

I have most of that in stock (don't have the Lyman manual or the puller)... I can have it all in stock by Wednesday next week if you really want it..

10-4 on that.
Go straight to the source.
I bought all my Dillon gear, press included direct. Only hardship was I actually had to phone in my order:eek: ... They couldn't/can't/won't process orders via the web.

I got my press and dies from dillon, very good sevice and I think you can save a little bit if you order direct.

Thanks for the info.

Is that Lyman's reloading book good or should I be looking at a different one? A place here in Red Deer is selling the Speers manual and a Hornady 2 volume set.

the lyman is probably a better choice- i've got a speer #11 and while it has ballistics charts, it could do a better job as far as powders go- from what i saw of 12, it was a lawyerized version of 11 with a few powders added- no real change- ie . they use a smaller powder charge to reach max, and lower the velocities accordingly- best to get at least 3-4 sources for your receipies, including some good ones off the net- i use the speer, winchester, remington, and what i can glean from the net- and i've been reolading 30 years

Got some parts under warranty last week for my RL550B straight from Dillon. Fast & quick, got it in 4-days USPS. Gotta love excellent service!!

Lyman's is very informative book. I started reloading with Lyman book... it's a good book for starters... It explains all information a new handloader should know. :) :)

I don't see a 9mm 550B conversion kit, powder die and tool head in your list which you will need as well unless you already have spares of any of these items.

I bought a new 550 on the weekend so I already have the conversion kit and toolhead. I'm not too familiar with what a powder die is...does a new 550 come with one?

I just have a few more questions:

  • Do I need a Dillon bench wrench? Will a standard 1" wrench not work?
  • Can anyone point me towards an inexpensive (digital or otherwise) scale? How about an inexpensive tumbler & separator?
  • Is the Dillon Accessory Package deal on this page:
    http://dillonprecision.com/template/p.cfm?maj=35&min=0&dyn=1&
    a good idea?

Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it.

1. No

2. Buy a balance beam scale. Much cheaper and works just as good.

3. I think is is just as cheap to buy calibers and a balance beam scale off of Ebay or locally. Really all you need from what I can see in the package.

If you have a 1" wrench you are good to go.

ps If you want a Dillon wrench you can have the one I have, never use it, send me a PM. RB

You can get the dies/conversion and I think I remember seeing the video too at TSE when I was in there a few days ago, the Lyman book (and many others) was on the shelf at Wholesale Sports last weekend when I was there (several copies of it). If you have a reason to drive down to Calgary (and what better reason than to get shooting supplies?) can probably get almost everything you need here.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the video unless you really need it. I have never seen it before but that's because it wasn't required, the machine is relatively easy to set up if you read the manual and think about what it is telling you before actually doing it.

Powder die comes with the RL550B package. You should have it when you bought your press.

SCALE - I recommend you buy a digital scale. You will eventually buy one. I hated zeroing the balance beam scale and ended up returning it after a week of %(^$$$$^(&** with it!. Trust me, you wont regret buying a digital scale. Shooting chrony (canadian manufacturer) has one. I use PACT, it's less pricey than Dillon.'s electronic scale.

CALIPER - you can buy a Lyman stainless steel dial caliper for $20 CAD

Tumbler/separator - I use Lyman, big and cheaper.

Wrench - a "crappy tire" wrench will do although Dillon's is not that pricey.

    Have fun shopping!!!:D :D

    Load safely

I picked up the press at The Shooting Edge on Saturday and we couldn't find any Dillon 9mm dies :(

Does wholesalesports carry any digital scales or tumbler/separators?

I don't know about the 550, but I recently bought a 650, and looked into ordering it direct from Dillon. I found they would *only* quote shipping via FedEx, at great expense. I ended up ordering from P&D in Edmonton instead, got it much faster and (including shipping) slightly cheaper than direct from Dillon.

YMMV, of course

For warranty parts like springs or the odd bolt or the like, call Dillon. But for purchasing parts, presses, dies, etc., I buy through bear.23, a.k.a. Brian from the reloadersbench. His logo is at the top of the page. He is cheaper than having it shipped up from the States.
I'm in Ontario, so I can't speak for his shipping to the east and west provinces, but he would be worth a call. He has a toll free number and he's great to deal with.

I visited the Dillon Plant in April when we were in Phoenix, and asked the guys about their policy. They told me that web or fax orders always seem to get screwed up. On the phone, they can clarify what you need and make sure the order goes out correctly. I have dealt with them on small parts and no problems at all.

Otherwise, head north to P & D or south to TSE. You'll be treated well at either place.
