Probably the cheesiest gunsmithing question you'll ever hear I know .. but i've been sitting here for an hour waiting for the brasso to dry on my Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 Butt Plate .. and I'm starting to wonder if I should just leave it overnight..

Just a light coating is all you need and buff off, re-apply if needed. You don't need to soak it . Oh make sure you shook the can first.

Okay, while I got your attention, there are very dark brown spots (that had the green gunk on it) the size of toonies ... will brasso take this off? Its pretty well desolved the green stuff while i'm waiting for it to dry but i'm worried its not going to take this very dark brown stuff off...

"...waiting for the Brasso to dry..." Whatever for? It's polish not solvent. Try some 0000 steel wool and the Brasso on the dark spots, but use it like polish.

Elbow grease is a key ingregient of any metal polish.

Put it on a cloth, rub till it's all dry and as shiny as it's gonna get, then repeat as required.

Brasso sucks, too.

Try some Solvol Autosol, and a soft cotton cloth. Beauty stuff, and worth the cost. Takes only a dab at a time.

If you think you might want to do any polishing, consider a buffing wheel.

A cheapo (scrounged, if possible) electric motor, a mandrel adaptor(CTire sells for under $10, a sewn buffing wheel, and a bar of red polishing compound.
If you go that way, you want to do it somewhere you don't have to worry about cleaning up, like out on the back porch.

In any case, waiting for the polish to dry is a waste of time. Object is to get scrubbing. No scrub, no polish! :)

Cheers
