Hi Folks,
I was wondering if anyone can enlighten me on how loud the various types of pellet rifles are ?
I'm looking at a higher power rifle above 495fps for shooting around the homestead here, what are the differences between CO2, Springer, PCP, Pump etc.
I guess the most important question is, Will any of them be quieter than a bolt-action .22 shooting .22Long subsonics ?
When I shoot the subsonic's, it almost seems like the bullet impact is the loudest sound.
I did some youtube searching but its pretty hard to tell.
Thanks in advance for any and all info !
Cheers,
Mike

C02 is more effected by weather. So in the cold. It will shoot lower FPS, then say the summer.
Springer are the hardest to shoot accurately, due to the dual recoil. Personally never could group with one.
PCP would be the loudest. Because face it, 2000 + PSI of air rushing out is loud. They made my ears ring.
Pumps can be quiet or loud depending on how many pumps. But not many super fast ones out there. Without paying alot.

My PCP on the highest setting, which was around 1060 FPS. Was just as loud, as firing a 22 HV. Where my 800 FPS Springer was as quiet as a 22 Short.

If you want quiet I'd look to the nitro piston offerings. By measurements and subjective impressions they're perceived as about half as loud as my same my 495 fps springer. Nitro piston .22 is definitely more quiet than my .22 shorts. It's been awhile since I used the springer but would guess it is similar in loudness to a .22 short.

I have the Benjamin Nitro piston in .22 and a Gamo CFX springer in .17.
The Benjamin is definitely a little quieter than the Gamo but in my opinion both are louder than a .22 rimfire shooting CCI quiets. At least to my ears.

I’d stick with a 22lr because I had many air rifles and none of them came close to the accuracy that I get with my savage mark 2. I found some Aguila super colibri at 690 FPS so trust me you could fire it inside and nobody in the other room will notice, you can’t achieve that with any high power air rifle. The CCI cb are another option, still super accurate, more weight and a little bit faster but still subsonic plus you can shoot all the other stuff. I’ll never go back to an air rifle.

I love a long barreled .22 LR shooting CB longs. Very quiet report out of a 22-26" barrel. The impact of the 29gr projectile at 700fps is quite loud though and will echo if it strikes something hard.
A spring powered .22 pellet rifle firing at a moderate speed has a very quiet report and the pellet impact is much quieter than a CB.

Glad I found this thread - was going to ask the same questions. I'm looking for a higher than 495 fps air rifle for backyard vermin control. Noise is a primary concern but so is accuracy. I guess cost is also a factor! My bit of research makes me think that a Nitro piston is the best option. Found this:https://store.prophetriver.com/crosman-177-nitro-venom-dusk-break-barrel-air-rifle-nitro-piston-technology-hardwood-w-raised-cheekpiece-rifled-barrel-1200fps-fluted-muzzle-break-c-w-centerpoint-3-9x32mm-precision-scope/ It's also available in a .22 at 950 fps but if possible I'd want to stick with .177 to keep commonality with other air rifles I already own. Looking for opinions on quietness, accuracy and value-for-money on this rifle.

Thanks all.

No experience with your option, https://store.prophetriver.com/cros...eak-c-w-centerpoint-3-9x32mm-precision-scope/

but I have a non-PAL nitro piston Benjamin/Crosman .177 pistol. Hardly a thump. Cheaply made, though.

Haven't shot mine enough to really vouch for its longevity but so far, it's pretty consistent and groups about two inches at 10 meters, benched, with Crosman Hollow Points. That's amazing considering I'm a lousy shot. Easier to shoot accurately than my spring piston Weirauch 97s.

It's not as much as the mechanism used to propel the pellet, as much as the barrel length and velocity.
- A pistol pushing a pellet @ 495fps will be louder than a rifle pushing the pellet at the same speed

For similar velocity, CCI CB (or Aguilla Colibri) seems quieter than a pellet rifle

Considering you are looking for vermin control I would look to .22 over .17 personally. My Crossman NP .22 with heavy pellets produces a lot less noise than my gamo high power .17. I don't even use the .17 as the crack it produces will get me in hot water with the neighbors lol. With the .22 I have no concerns riding my yard of anything I don't want hanging around...including all the fancy haircut rats (squirrels) that everyone feeds and thinks are so cute.

not sure if it helps. but i picked up some aguila super sniper? or aguila sniper. anyway it was something like that. features a shortened 22lr case and a 60 grain bullet. extremely accurate out to about 100 yards and really quiet. unless youre in a densely populated area i doubt anyone would really notice or complain. i was shooting them out of a marlin xt22 with 22" barrel.
