Shotshells are not like brass rifle shells, many times a shotshell with a load just a few grains under the recommended will give a very "off" sounding report. Combustion within a shotshell is not as well contained as in a rifle, with many ways for the gases to pass the wad/shotcharge/slug. I would stick to the recommended loads from the powder manufacturers, but i think you could sub a 1 oz. slug load with a 1oz. shot load, as most slug loads are at the top end. There are some very light loads using 7625 and others which generate pressures in the 6,000LUP range, which I'm sure could be used with your 1oz. slug.

What truly boring lives they must lead
edit: I do substitute components and go over the published loads in baby steps.
that's because published loads sometimes make no sense. The highest loads in one manual are the starting loads in another.
