Is there a way to search FRT's to see what's been issued in the last year?
Have things really ground to a halt at the RCMP lab?
The only new "black rifles" that I can think of being approved were the Jard J48, T97 and the Modern Hunter. I'm sure I've missed a couple.
Thoughts?

I hope they have ground to a halt so they can examine my 12.3 VZ58 that they have had since October 5th 2013.

It would be interesting to know how many FRT's have been issued for black rifles that are not AR15's.

I don't think any black looking semi have been granted a NEW FRT on NR status since the CZ & Swiss Arms fiasco except for the MH by ATRS. But I could be wrong. Not too sure how they justify their time sheets at the Lab, I guess its not work if you're not working to prohibit.

I think they should receive a bonus each time they're able to classified a rifle Prohibited or Restricted.

Once again, the FRT entries are NOT, I say again, NOT done at the RCMP lab !!! The FRT section is a separate entity that is not part of the firearms lab.

What? they need to verify the firearm at the lab, to determine origin, full auto, converted auto, measuring the barrel, qualifying the action as a variant of, etc.
Once that is done at the Lab, a frt is issued on the results.

Seems like the lab is heavily involved to me...

We need to get a freedom of information request in to get the lab info.

1. How many people work in the lab?
2. What is the budget of the lab?
3. How is the lab funded (which dept or organization)?
4. Whom is the lab supervisor and whom to they report too?
5. What I the mission statement for the lab?
6. What criteria is used for each firearm submitted?
7. What qualifications do the lab employees have/hold?

It is NOT done at the lab, the FRT section has their own people that do this. The lab is not part of the CFP but the FRT section is. Two different entities, one does regulatory (FRT) and one does criminal (Forensic Firearms Laboratory).

You can ask for all the info you want pertaining to the lab but your questions won't be answered, now, if those are directed to the Canada Firearms Program, FRT section, that may be different. If you met the FRT people you'd be surprised that they aren't what most people think.

By "lab" are folks referring to the SFSS? The good folks who determined that the BD guns, the Czech and Swiss rifles are all prohibited? After they had previously determined that they were either non-restricted or restricted based on barrel length?

As usual, Tiriaq has it correct. The folks that examine firearms for FRT entry purpose/legal classification are indeed part of the Specialised Firearms Support Services (SFSS). SFSS is not associated to the lab other than being a section within the RCMP. SFSS isn't part of the lab system. The Forensic Firearm lab deals with firearms used in criminal code offence situations .

I know it's semantics but I prefer if we get it right (otherwise we look a lot like a Liberal politician lumping all firearms owners into one negative category!!).

Yes thats right

So then the SFSS is under the RCMP control and jurisdiction then, correct?

So if submitting a freedom of information act request it should be directed to this dept and nothing contained within should be protected by "national security" requirements or "part of an ongoing criminal investigation".
