Just wondering who still uses open sights while hunting? My deer stands in the fields I take my .243.My stands in the woods I like open sights where the shots are 50 yards or less. Also when I'm stalking I like the open sights better.Anyone else this way?

I do most of my hunting with a muzzleloader and open sights, and also have a open sighted bolt action .30-30. My type of hunting gets me within 100 yards most of the time, and I can wait for a better shot when they are too far out.

1 30-30 has a peep, 1 30-30 with a scope, shotgun and enfield both have open sights, they are so much quicker for me.

Of all of my rifles I only have one scoped. The rest boast a variety of peeps and regular irons. My eyes are still good and in the brush country where I hunt the irons work fine.

cheers Darryl

I use a 356 win mod94bb with peep sights and a mod 94 with open sights in my main hunting area . Most shots under 100 yds. If I am going somewhere with long open shots I have my 270 with a scope.

i've hunted elk, moose, deer, and goat with open sighted rifles. for about 7 years (before last) i did all my hunting with open sighted rifles. now after having my brno scoped, i alternate.

I did hunt with open sights for years until I tried a scope.A prefer a scope for running deer.I find it way quicker to aquire my target with a low power scope,or red dot(even in the thick stuff).I also like a peep better than conventional open sights

Peeps on the .308 BLR for deer.
Leupy on the .25-06 for speed goats
Scout scope on the M305 for open field moving shots...... if I'm feeling gamey.

Here in BC, we can hunt big game from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. I've shot a lot of moose at last light when open sights were unuseable. The only hunting rifle I have without a scope is my little Model 94 in .30-30 Win. I pack it along when cutting firewood, fencing, ice fishing etc. in case we come across a wolf. Works great for killing steers too :)

My favourite deer rifle is my 1885 in 45-70 with a carbine style ladder sight. sure, it's not perfect for every application, but it's great to carry and will do the trick out to 200 yards, which is as far as I'd shoot it at a game animal.

Open sights on running deer in the thick woods where shots are under 75 yards.

Why are you shooting at running deer? Tool.

I used open sights for years. Longest shot was 175 took out my first bull moose well enough. Scope's just handier

All my hunting arms have scopes, but there is no doubt that open sights would have served me well with 99% of the game I have taken.

X2

....I have had very good luck with EAW quick release bases and dismount the scope on that rifle for heavier bush ... which is frequent...the iron sights have worked for me on several occasions...and I surprised myself how well - and how quick - they are to use.

I guess I get over dependent on optics... although as I get older they do seem easier to use.

The other thing is no matter how light the scope they always seem to change the balance of a rifle .. and add weight.
