How many of you have lost red dots to the SKS scout mount?

My father wants to put a red dot on his otherwise stock SKS. I have a kwikrail on mine with a TRS-25, which he likes, but he still wants to use stripper clips. I thought of the BC Tactical Scout Mount, then I remembered reading about a bunch of people who lost red dots due to spent casings. I could do the ejection port mod, or go for a lower profile reflex sight, but before I start purchasing and hacking away at the rifle I thought I'd see what you guys think...

Mount a shell deflector plate under the red dot scope.

Don't most shell deflectors replace the rear sight leaf or require drilling & tapping? If I were to drill and tap I might as well get a deflector/scope mount combo, but he's set on a forward mounted red dot, so that means saving the rear sight leaf for a mount.

I've done the mod and use a BC Tactical mount. It works for me. I've really only ran about 60 - 70 rounds through it though... At the time I thought it would be cool to have a Taticool SKS. These days...not so much.

I picked up finally a deflector and the nc star mount bolt/ cover. I have not attempted either piece yet should get to it over the weekend. Will pic the results. Was thinking I'd like the versatility of a low power scope or red dot mount. Not sure about holding zero.

Yeah they don't tell you that you need to use a mini dot on that scout mount. Or that you have to file the bottom of it or you piston may jam. You need a super small red dot for the scout mount, like half the size of the trs or you could lose a lens. I would use the Choate mount if I were you. It's the best mount if you want to use strippers. Cheaper too. 8-32 tap from Lordco and 8-32 x 3/8" screws from Home Depot is what I used and some red thread locking compound. Or get a super small dot on that scout mount. I've tried a couple of the rails and they cause issues. I would not block the action with deflectors or rails unless he's okay with malfunctions. People who say they never get stove pipes with their rails I'm pretty sure are full of it. There was a different style of scout mount at wolverine that mounts well clear of the ejection path, I would also look into that.

I must admit, so far no malfunctions with my kiwkrail, knock on wood! Which scout mount are you talking about that wolverine carries? I just had a look and the only thing I saw was a mount specifically for a Burris Fastfire II that replaces the rear sight leaf..

It seems the scout mount has fallen out of favour and sales have dropped right off since the Kwik Rail came out so I made the decision to stop carrying the scout mount and continue with the Kwik Rail. I have tried both on my 858 and much prefer the Kwik Rail.

It goes to show the various ejection paths of the SKS from rifle to rifle. Some people lose optics to that scout mount and others don't. That might explain why some work with flat top rails and others don't, niether of mine did. It's a gamble unless you drill and tap a receiver mount wich isn't too hard but more than worth the effort.

IMO the side ejection mod should be done if your plan on using a scout mount. I suspect many have not performed that mod and then run into issues with their optics getting dinged.

I second the side ejection mod! (found in the DIY sticky) I too was skeptical at first, did it anyways,.... and now after a year of testing... I agree its a worth while mod. I also second the drill tap receiver mount, hands down the best way to put optics on your SKS. But the Wartak/Magwedge rails are more than adequate too; they do cause stovepipes... but from my experience that is like maybe 2 in a 100 shots. And that was before I did the side ejection mod.

I have one of these (that I bought about 25 years ago) that replaces the wooden top handguard with a steel vented one.

http://www.gunauction.com/buy/10766.../sks-metal-vent-handguard-and-shell-deflector

It has two threaded holes in the left side to attach the removable shell deflector to.

I haven't used it in that many years either, but I do remember that it worked well.

It's been so long now, I don't even know who made it.

It was probably Tapco though.

I have had several stovepipes with magwedge rail after the ejection mode as well. In all honesty I wanted to like this rail, but I couldn't. The problems started the day one with the front pin starting to work itself out of position after 40-50 rounds. No amount of loctite would help (for the pin is hollow and loctite wouldn't cure). After two or three frustrating experiences I have replaced the the spring pin with a screw and a nut. This seem to fix the problem. After a few months the holes at the rear section of the rail (where the cover pin is inserted) have been enlarged - the aluminum got chewed up by the steel dust cover pin which had an impact to accuracy. Next, the kwickpin spring ball lost its spring and the ball... Finally, my solution of the front pin issue caused the rail to gave up its host (the steel screw chewed up the aluminum hole causing the front portion of the rail to broke off at the tip so its not usable anymore). So..... I ended up installing a scout mount made by Scout Industries... I put a red dot on it and so far so good...
