I've been reading threads on the Internet about loads and such then came across a post asking how many shots is too hot? I was at the range last weekend, let 180 reloads and 20 factory rounds go. At one point my barrel was so hot (during target changes) and I accidently touched it and my hand turned red. I was shooting 5 round groups, then 10 round groups. I waited as long as it took me to reload a magazine between groupings.

I'm worried about prematurely burning out the barrel, and obviously I'm after accuracy. How hot is too hot?

Well if your barrel isn't screwed after doing what you just did it prob won't be long before it is. Why on earth would you do that ?

Na, shoot it and enjoy it. learn it. Once YOU feel that the barrel isn't keeping up with you, send it to a smith for a Krieger or whatever.

If you are shooting from a practical field position, the barrel won't be the limiter for most. If you are shooting from a bench rest of some sort, you will probably want to slow down to let it cool.

Sounds like you were shooting follow up shots too fast. Especially on a hot summers day.

I have been prone to get a little eager to shoot as well, especially when my range time is limited.

One thing I do to slow things down (if I'm sure that my mag works with my reloads) is single feed, extract the spent case and then #### and dry fire a few times, working on my fundamentals. Empty chamber, read the wind/mirage and *click* a few. Then when I'm confident, take another shot. And repeat. It takes longer to shoot groups, but I:

A)burn less ammo
B)practice trigger control and fundamentals/form
C)get to concentrate on the wind changes
D)keep my barrel cooler

I tried having two guns set up on benches side by side, but the difference in triggers and recoil ended up being a negative.

Or, you could take up smoking and hack a dart between groups haha

I had 3 hours and 220 rounds to burn and test loadings. I suppose I'm too used to semi auto shooting.

However, tail end of that session, my best grouping 10 shots 100meters with 1 flier (i pulled) at 1.041" and 0.651" without the flier (9shots). The rounds were 43.5gr varget, 175 smk, gm210m, and lapua.
