How many of the AR-15 type rifle shooters slap the bottom of their magazines after inserting them into the magwell??

I do because at a 3 Gun match I lost the magazine when I didn't seat it properly (user phuckup, of course :D ).

I haven't seen anyone else do it, though. Thoughts?

Every time with my AR, not pistols though.

Some of my LAR 10 mags don't like to seat all that well on a closed bolt, so I removed a bit of material from the follower. Much easier to seat them now.

I knock it so the rounds move to the rear of the mag and i insert it till the mag release pops back into place(it will click). If you hit it too hard you can dislodge a rd and get a stoppage. On a open bolt there rerally is no issue. A improperly mag where exactly five rds fit will have issues. They should be spaced at 5 1/2 rds or get the 10 rounders.
Only mags i had issues with are those thermold ones.

Push/Pull.

Push or slap into magazine well. Pull on it to make sure it's firmly seated and locked, then hit the bolt release.

rap tack and rack... in goes mag tap it in then rack the gun... never had an issuse..

Just so you know its pronounce

"Tap; rack and go" in that order.

If the problem with the stoppage is that the mag isn't seated; chambering another round could result in a double feed or something else retarded.

seat that ####er properly. Rack the slide. Smash that ####ing forward assist and get rounds going downrange.

As noted in several posts, the correct technique for reloading AR type firearms is to:
- insert the magazine (PUSH)...with vigor!.....then... (PULL) to ensure that it is seated properly.
I have seen AR's completely f**king locked solid by the over enthusiastic pound on the base plate...the magazine lips smashed and practically welded to the receiver.....as the magazine is forced into the receiver that crucial extra couple of milimetres...

With a pistol, it's generally impossible to produce the same malfunction due to the magazine baseplate preventing further entry of the magazine body into the receiver.

Before start signal, push/pull

On the clock, simply insert. The LAR mags don't seem to be that finicky with my STI, but if I think there's gonna be problems, I download them by one.

Interesting thread. I don't tap or slap anything. During a speed reload I drive the mag in hard to insure it seats. There is a very audible "click" and you can feel it click in as well. I'm not sure if you would notice any of that during stress though. If your mags are constructed properly I can't see them ever not seating if you drive them in hard enough . If you have to alter your movements to accommodate poorly pinned mags, just buy new ones. Mags are consumables IMO.

I think you only need the forward assist on sub-optimal designs of rifle, like the Armalite family.

;)

Push/Pull with rifles, handguns I generally don't bother. Never lost a handgun magazine, I don't exactly run around with my handguns, as much as I'd like to.

tap rack

"The old CF Plastic mag use to break when you tapped them" The new plastic mags and metal ones are totally fine :)
