how many rifles do you take on a one week hunting trip(deer). i'm a new guy to hunting , but shot my first deer with a 270 win this year. Brought a 30-06 (710) as a back-up. thinking of buying a new gun for Christmas, just because. Is 3 too many? or am i just nuts? thanks again.

God I hope not! If you are crazy for owning 3 deer rifles I must be certifiable. ;)

As to you original question .......................... If I go hunting for longer than a day trip from home I always pack 2 rifles just in case. It is pretty cheap insurance.

Right now I have two, a 25-06 and a 303. But I am planning on having more by next year. I would definately take two along, and I also like to take a gun along that has iron sights in case my scope breaks. My plan is to take 2 and keep another in the back of the truck, just in case I change my mood.

Well usually we think in terms of 3 guns - a 22 or shotgun for opportunity grouse, primary rifle, and back up. Now - we usually only have a couple of 22's/shotguns and a couple of backups amongst maybe 4 people or something, It's unlikely that we'll all break our rifles at the same time. But we usually hunt fairly far from home, and like boo said it's pretty cheap back up.

Having said that - if you're new to hunting you'll do yourself the most good as a rule of thumb to use one rifle for the whole season unless it breaks. A hunter who knows his gun well and uses the same gun all the time tends to do better with it especially when you're cold or tired or you have to make that sudden surprise shot. There's an old saying: "Beware the one gun hunter". Take 4 or 5 animals with a gun, THEN look at switching. (there are exceptions of course :D )

I always bring a backup and most years somebody needs it. If they don't I usually get it out of the case myself. This fall I shot my first mulie doe and my moose with my 300 win mag and then the last two mulie does with my Kimber 308. Adds a little variety to the hunt, I must say I always use my primary rig to hunt my primary quarry.

Two rifles and a shot gun. I bring some slugs for the SG just as a second back up. If you flew in for a week and didn't have a gun through some bad luck It would be a very long week.

I only take 1 rifle when I hunt moose or deer. We useually quad back in the bush
up to 10 miles to hunt moose, so my rifle does get beat up, but it still shoots straight.

I always bring two guns when going on a hunting trip. Usually my Marlin GG in 45\70 for walk n' stalk in the thick nasty stuff, and a Tikka T3 in .308 with a big scope for hunting the clearings and swamps. I don't think of the extra gun as a back-up, I just like to keep my options open.

:D

Same here, and sometimes two shotguns as well, a cartridge and a muzzle loader.

Usually one rifle at least will be a BPCR , the other a single shot something- or other....

I usually only do day trips for deer, so I only bring one deer rifle, plus I might bring a coyote rifle along. If I were on a multi-day hunt, I would bring another big game rifle for back up. Thankfully I've never had the need for a back up, but there's always a chance of something bad happening.

A back up rifle is always a good idea, but not a 710, you need to get rid of that. As back up, I'd say one is plenty. As far a owning three guns being too many ??? Silly man. That's like asking a woman if she has too much gold or diamonds duhhhh. :)
