Just got back from a couple of hours shooting this morning .
I thought i would try a couple of different tactics this morning as i noticed something with my shooting yesterday .
I was tending to "dwell" a little on my shots so i thought i would try and speed it up , just a little .
This morning , using this "new to me " method along with a range bag as well as trying my regular bi pods .
Rifles used were my trusty Tikka T3 Tac with Trijicon AccuPoint 5-20x50 , new to me Christenson Arms 6.5 Creedmoor with Bushnell Forge 2.5-15x50mm scope .
In the Tikka i was using 155g A max along with 178 ELD-X and lastly 168g CT ballistic tipped rounds .
Shooting distance today was 104 yards .
The Tikka shot the 155 Amax with a .559 moa using the bi pod , using the 168 g CT,s the first group shot a little high and measured 1.071 .
The next group i re zerod down 1 moa and used the rear bag.
WOW , my best group ever 0.187 . I was shocked .
This rifle is still using the original stock .
Can it get better ?

No need to replace the stock you just proved it - if you happen to shoot just over MOA it's not the end of the World. My advice is leave stock as-is if you decide to spend $$ you will just be wasting your money in my opinion. I shot a .81 four shot group at 200 yards. Factory T3 stock on my 204 Ruger

This sums up most shooters... best group ever, now I’m gonna change a bunch of stuff and mess with perfection and now I’m down the rabbit hole of thousands of dollars and can’t get 1moa outa my rifle again.

Sorry to be blunt but you just shot your best group ever why would you “change” anything, you should be looking at “how” do I repeat what I was able to do.

Hi , no worries about being blunt , i change bullets and powders all the time trying to improve or test , heck i even changed the way i was shooting , its just one of those things i guess :) .

As for repeating it , yeah that's gonna be a challenge as i am just about out of those particular bullets and can't seem to find them in my regular shopping sites lately .

How many shots in a group?

You cannot call a rifle a 1/4 moa rifle because it did it once one day. It has to do it all the time to wear such a title.

Remember, flyers go both ways.

Its hard to shoot really small groups consistently because refraction is usually refracting the target image by more than the group size we hope to shoot.

So prior to this you shot using a bipod up front but nothing (or your support hand) in the rear? Then shot your best group using a bipod up front and a rear bag? It's pretty rare that using a rear bag in conjunction with a bipod won't permit you to shoot a tighter group than when using a bipod alone.

To answer your question- yes - it can be better.
Shoot 5 shots group - 10 times and measures. This will tell you much more than one group.
You do not specify how many rounds you shot in .187

2-3 shot one time mean nothing. 10 rounds give you a better way to assess the system and your shooting.
More rounds you shoot at a target - more it show the capability - matter of statistics. You cannot take the good and discard the bad.

You have to build your confidence in the repeatability of your system.
It’s also a matter of what you want to achieve : Are you shooting to hunt, f Class, Prs or just for fun.
The good measure of someone and a system can be taken when you compete against others.
Have fun.

Thanks , that will be my goal next weekend :)

I have an SKS that can shoot one hole at 100 yards all day long.
I shoot one shot on paper one day then stop, and I'm not a liar.
In the zeros every time.

OK , on that particular group i took 3 shots within 1 minute.
I found some targets going back to 2015 , shot 3 round groups ( consecutive shooting, 3 rounds each within a minute or so of each other ) , that same rifle showed some very small groups .
Ranges varied from 104 to 113 yards . This one though was the smallest that i have ever shot . Ill take your advice this weekend though , going for 5 round groups :)

I have never shot a 3 shot match before. Try shooting 10 shots and see how big your group is. This will let you know how accurate your is.

Typical target rifle/F-Class match is 2 sighters and 10 shots for score, usually shot alternate shot with 2-3 shooter to a target. Sometimes 2 sighters and 15 for score, same format and these matches might take 40 minutes if you have slow shooters and slow marking. 300m ISSF matches are 60 shots broken down into 20 round strings. Down in the US I have shot matches that are 2 sighters and 20 for score all single string. Barrels do get hot, groups might start to open up near the end of a long string.

Pretty sure if i shoot 12 rounds with my 300 Win Mag with the faster rate of shooting that i was doing, that barrels getting hot . I know even with the 308 , after 6 to 7 rounds that barrel is warm . Im not using a Match Target rifle , just regular store bought stuff , but , i will try 3 round , 5 round then go for the mighty 10 rounds this weekend just for the heck of it :)

Well i couldn't bring myself to shoot 10 shot groups this weekend . For one , i was on a limited time and i use 4 different rifles when i shoot and second , i usually take one " cold bore " shot at a mark , then i take a second shot to make sure i'm " happy " , then i start my group . So having said that , after 7 rounds in my 308 , the barrel was extremely warm to the touch so 5 round groups it was . My 300 Win mage was also hot , so , i decided 5 round groups was best . So , the 308 managed one 5 shot group of 0.291 , 0.116 and a last of 0.702.
The 300 managed 0.614 , 0.559 , 0.427 and a 0.228 .
The stand out for me at least today was my older 338 Lapua Mag . I haven't used this rifle for a couple of years now . I had 50 or so 285 grain Berger bullets loaded so took them with me .
One group measured 0.211 and the next was 0.142 .Needless to say i was happy with this and it was getting warmer.
You guys that shoot 10 round groups with factory stuff have my respect for printing smaller groups .
I shot these 5 round groups in less than in less than 2 minutes . I used the 308 , then the 300 , 6.5 Creedmoor then the 338 Lapua .
After the second 5 round group on each rifle , i kinda figured that was enough as i could barely hold the rifles from the barrels due to the heat .
Still a work in progress to see what bullet/powder combo works for each rifle .
