How much does my M14/M1A weigh?

I posted this on the M14 forum, but figured some of you might find this useful.

It's very pleasant to see that over the last ~10 years the M14 has come a long way. It used to be that our options were limited to barrel profile, barrel length, twist rate and GI, wood or McMillan stocks. Now we have so many options and it came to my attention that we don't have a weight database, or at least not one that I know of, that's readily available all in one post on the forum.

A quote from XXIV corps:
XXIV Corps said:
From the U.S. Rifle 7.62MM, M14 and M14E2 Field Manual No. 23-8 dated 7 May 1965.

Weights in Pounds (approximate):

M14 rifle with full magazine and cleaning equipment, 11 1/4
M14 rifle with full magazine and cleaning equipment, selector, and bipod, 13
Empty magazine, 1/2
Full magazine (with ball ammunition), 1 1/2
Cleaning equipment, 2/3
M2 bipod, 1 3/4
M14E2 rifle with full magazine, 14 1/2

I'd like to start collecting data on modern stock weights (SAGE, JAE, AG, Blackfeather, etc...) and barrelled actions with different profile barrels/lengths. I'll be searching the forum over the coming days to include as much as I can come up with. If anyone knows the weight of a particular action or stock, please list the details of what you have or know and how you weighed it (postage scale, stood on a scale with your rifle, etc...)

If you have the weight of a barreled action, please include the weight with the trigger group.

USGI wood stocks vary quite a bit in weight, due to the density of the individual wood blanks. If you want a light one, you might try taking a postal scale to a gunshow or someplace where there are a number of stocks to pick from.

Here are some stocks I have weighed, notice that some of the standard "skinny" stocks weigh as much as a Big Red, and that the GI fiberglass weighs more than some of the wood stocks...

This is a good idea, a database of weight is handy to have around when trying to build a specific rifle, I will do some weighing of some stalks and a rifle later today and post em up

USGI Overton Walnut Stock all metal included, No cleaning kit - 4 Lbs

Norinco M14 with USGI walnut stock also Overton, but not the same stock as above, dummy selector kit, cleaning kit, USGI solid fiberglass handguard, sadlak op rod spring guide, USGI op rod spring, Winchester USGI Op Rod, USGI flash suppressor with USGI front and rear sight, 2 shims for gas cylinder, grease - 9.5 Lbs, 10 lbs with standard 20 round mag pinned to 5 with 5 Norinco 7.62x51mm FMJ rounds

really when you get down to you could almost go over every part and even compare the USGI parts to Norc parts to current production US made parts, might have to tear the rifle down entirley.

hope this helps

This should be made into a sticky, for data base reasons, as well as all the important info Different has accumulated over the years, maybe a sticky with sub sections, like specs on weight, and manufacturer specs n such, just a thought

Thank you all for your input. Does anyone have the weight of a Juggernaut Tactical stock?

I have added most of the information regarding weights of M14 items in this thread to my spreadsheet. I did not add weights of individually configured rifles. If you would like a copy of my .xls file, send me an e-mail request. I delete your e-mail upon reply. leeace99@hotmail.com
