Im playing around with the idea of buying/building another upper for my AR to shoot long range. Options besides the .223 are 6.5Grendel and 6.8SPC but looking at ballistics data Im having a hard time figuring out if its even worth straying from 5.56
Im using data from this sheet:
http://www.65grendel.com/graphics/grendelballistics.pdf
Out to 500m it says the 5.56 is actually dropping 2 inches less than the 6.8SPC, while the 6.5 Grendel is dropping about 8" less than the 5.56. They're all within about 10" of eachother and that to me seems negligible. At 500m would there be any point at all in spending money on 6.8 or 6.5 uppers and the associated costs that come with shooting these rounds?
Now the next question is out to 1000 yards, they list the drop for 6.5 Grendel 428". To me that seems excessive but I don't know squat about long range shooting. Is this actually acceptable? The makers of the round claim an effective range of 1000 yards and say the bullet stays supersonic past 1km... but is this really practical out to that distance?
Realistically I don't think I'd spend much time shooting past 500 yards (if even that far) but it'd be nice to get something capable of going further, if such a thing even exists for a standard AR15 lower.
Care to discuss?
