I am looking at setting up one of my CZ 452 (either American or Varmint) for strictly punching paper. Looking at Target Dot reticle and was leaning towards a V16.

Some are saying not enough magnification. Should be looking at 24 or 36X. Range will mostly be 50 yds but will go to 100.

Looking for thoughts, suggestions before I buy. Thanks.

Ive got a mueller eraticator 8.5x25-50mmAO for paper punching on a 10/22. decent glass and lots of magnification for shooting the heads off of match sticks.

might wanna check out thier new 8-32×44 thats coming out soon.

On my own 10x target leupold, I got the fine duplex reticle and was glad I did, I like it better than a dot, even leupy's fine dots.

Since the 24 and the 36 are the same price, it's a hard choice I guess, it's all about how good your eyes are. The 24x will have a larger exit pupil and be brighter, important if you're an older person, but the 36 will get you closer. Keep us updated. I'm building either a 6mm br, or a .300 whisper next spring myself, and am going to save up over the winter to get either the 24x or the 36x.

Of course, the FOV on a 36x is like.... 18 inches at 50 yards, so you're not going to be doing alot of plinking with it.

P.S. PJT and goose,
Variable scopes are find for field use, but for serious and formal target work, it's all about the fixed power optics with their better ...... well..... everything except versatility.

And there is no way a bushnell or a mueller is going to be in the same league as a leupy competition, or even a weaver fixed t series.

Keeping in mind that a CZ is not a BR rimfire I would have to urge you away from a really high-mag fixed power. Definately not more than 24x, you might want to shoot some silhouette with it and shooting unsupported with that much mag is pretty brutal.

That said anything less than 15x on it's highest setting is somewhat frustrating to shoot off the bench.

I'd take a really long, hard look at any of the higher variable Sightron scopes. They are getting great reviews in the silhouette world and include a bunch of really neat features like 20moa turrents, great repeatability and an available largish target dot which is a really hit for silhouette.

Although a fixed scope has better optics, being able to dial down a good variable when dealing with mirage is a nice option.

What is your budget?
Cheers,
Grant

How much magnification??

Thanks for the posts so far.

Yes I know the CZ is not BR, but I do not shoot competitions, strictly informal plinking and really like small groups. I have number of 22's set up for gophers, hunting etc. This will be primarily for paper (and I did shoot a fly with it yesterday at 50 yds).

As for price I would like to stay around the $400.
