How much money should you accually spend on a scope???

Hey all,

Well I am planning to buy a .22 and a 30-06. I was wondering how much I should accually spend on a scope. I am 22 so I don't have tons of cash to be spending on a really nice scope. Would around $100 for the .22 and around $300 for the 30-06 be good enough or would that just be a waste of money?

Does Bushnell make good scopes or should I be looking at a differant company to be purchasing a scope from?

A good scope for your .30-06 in your price range would be the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm at $250 Wholesale Sports. Or the Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 at $330. Or the Leupold 'Rifleman' at $290. ;)

Personally, I think Bushnell makes good scopes. I have them in the Elite 4200 & 3200 series on a few of my rifles. I also used the Bushnell 'Trophy' series scopes in the past with success. I think they represent good value for the money spent. I also have & use Leupold scopes VX-II's & VX-III's but of course they are [a lot] more money.

For scoping a .22 look at the Bushnell "Banner Dusk & Dawn" series scopes. All models are less than $150. Most under $100...

I would suggest getting what you can afford. For $300 you can get a real good used scope for that 06. I would look at the Elite 3200 or 4200°s, I ve had them on all my rifles and have never had a problem.

So I don't need to spend $700 on a new scope for it to be decent? If so great because thats way too much for me to be spending on a scope.

The Bushnell 3200 and 4200 are probably the best value for the dollar, most guys seem very happy with them from what I have read over the years on this site. I think you are better of getting a 4200 if you can afford to, it's just the better quality scope of the two.
 
Bushnells i dont realy like them i had one fall apart on me when i was testing my friends 300 weatherby wasnt a pritty sight lol to many hot loads.....

Your post is pretty vague... How about some details? What model Bushnell? New/used? How old? Had it been mounted on any other rifles? Any previous abuse [accidental or otherwise - i.e. had it been dropped?] How many rounds?

I had an older Bushnell Banner 3-9x32 on a Ruger 77 in .300 Win Mag & it stood up to a lot of full house reloads just fine. Buddy also had a 'Trophy' 3-9x40mm on his Win 70 in .300 Win Mag & it also stood up to the same loads fine.......

For a .22 scope I would get a Tasco Mag .22 scope.....3-9X32 $52.99 @ SIR

Comes with the mounts....I have one on my Winny 64....works great...

Gives you a few extra $$$ for the 30/06 scope

Buy the best scope you can afford...if the scope craps out, the gun is useless if you are on a hunt. A quality scope will minimize this.

Good range is the mid-end scopes which start around the $300-400 range. My favorite for the money is a Leupold VX-II...I think they are around $500. If you can find a used Leupold, doesn't matter what condition it is in as they have lifetime warranties so if anything is wrong, it will be fixed for free.
(NO, I don't work for Leupold or any scope manufacturer...I used to sell firearms/scopes at Wholesale a couple years back.)

If money is no object, go for a Swarovski...should run in the range of $1500-$3000. Wonderful to look through.
 
You can't go wrong with a Leupold, that's all I use except a Weaver on my .22...Bushnell doesnt compare I dont think and their warranty can be problems.
 
Leupold has the lifetime warrenty but will they fix a scope if it has been transfered and there is no receipt? I do like those scopes but $500 is just too much for me to spend right now. If I can find a used one, I will really take a good look at it. I will start looking now for a good deal and maybe I will catch a good break.

IIRC,Leupold's lifetime guarentee is for the scope itself regardless of how many owners it has had.

I just spent all of 60 bucks at SIR on a scope for my 22. Tasco 3-9 X 32. Works great for my uses (targets at 200 yds or less).

For years I had a cheap airgun scope (3-7 X 20) on my 22 but it wasn't designed to handle recoil and one day it just exploded and the reticle flew out.....:redface:

I don't use a scope on my 30-06 but I wouldn't spend more than 100 bucks if I needed a scope. But that's on a 21 yr old student budget....;)

BTW. Bushnell elites as well as bausch and laumb(B&L)(spelling) elites also have a lifetime warranty regardless of the original owner. You can sometimes pick one up for real cheap.
For the 22, just head over to Wally world and pick up a cheap bushnell fixed power for less than $100.
 
For your 22, consider the Weaver 6x target scope that someone has one sale right now. A very nice scope and the AO really helps with the shorter ranges.

Shooting is shooting so why make your time with the 22 an ordeal with crappy optics. I bet you will spend more time shooting the 22 then the '06.

Bushnell Elites, Nikon Buckmaster, Burris Fullfield, and some Luppies are great value and will stand up to typical use.

You no longer have to spend a fortune to get great optics but you still need to spend enough. Look at the many posts to see what members have used with success.

Better to spend less on the rifle then on the optics.

Thanks guys. I will try to get a Leaupold and if it's not in the price range, I will look at the Bushnell Elite 4200 and if that is still too much then I will look at a 3200. I wanted to make sure they $100 for a .22 and $300 for a 30-06 was enough and if it wasn't then I would have to buy a cheaper gun or something to accomadate getting a more expensive scope.

For a .22 I am not too worried about a GREAT scope, I just want it not to break because of shooting the gun and I want it so stay accurate, like I don't want to be re-aimming my scope everyday
 
I'd take an Elite 3200 over any of the low end Leupolds any day. I just can't stand non-click adjustments.
