How much power is too much?

Hunting and long distance shooting don't normally go well together.

Most hunting (in Canada) is usually done within 200m range. Forest, brush etc won't let you see anything past 50m or so at all. In some cases, even 3x magnification is too much. Don't expect to shoot past 250m.

You may have to have two different rifles setup for the two very specific purposes, along with calibers and scopes.

NF 3-15x50 or 5.5-22x50 are good, middle of the road options. Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-1x42 is a cheaper alternative and is not a bad choice at all (I have one on a 22LR of all things *LOL*). Some guys like a lot of magnification on the high end, some prefer lower magnification (especially if routinely hunting in dense bush). I prefer more magnification but do a lot of plains hunting.

I saw that Bushnell and I do like the range it has... I've also seen what I think is the 4 to 30x bushnell, but I'm hesitant to pick up a scope that claims to have such a range.

I'd like a Nightforce NXS, but even used the 5 - 22x is $400 to $600 more than a new Leupold.. Viper PST's have been getting more good reviews than bad on Snipershide as well... so much food for thought!

I've got a 3x9 sitting on the rifle for the time being just to start getting some rounds downrange... I think I may just have to go with the higher, and keep a cheap(er) low magnification scope for the northern one a year hunts... I don't mind 25 rounds here or there to re-zero a scope, so it's not a completely bad option I think.

I find my 3-9 a little low on the high end, and my 6-18 a little high on the low end. I recently got a 4.5-14 from a member here and it is a nice compromise, IMO.

I'd love to get a 6.5-20 for target shooting, but I don't think it would be very versatile as an all-around choice.

What kind of budget are you looking at exactly ?

The Elite 6500 4.5-30x50 is not a bad scope. Big and heavy but decent glass and wide magnification range.

One thing to keep in mind though is that better glass can sometimes result in the need for less magnification.

4.5x14x40 not adjustable objective, becuase the last thing I want to play with is the scope when an animal is present. I find it to be the best all around scope, from 50yrds to 360yrds. Just my opinion, at the end of it all the 4.5 magnification is not low enough for one eyed shooters up close in the bush, but if you are a shooter that uses both eyes, 5yrd shots are quick.
