I enjoy shooting the milsurp rifles. I have to reload to be able to shoot. Factory ammo is not always good and for the odd-ball calibers we got to pay a loooooot.

I found a shop with some Swede.
6.5 mm sk ptr m/94
prj m/41
prickskytte
02777003 08/03

The little shop is hidden from collector eyes and the guy wants 150$ for a battlepack.

He also has some argentine ammo, 8mm Mauser and 30-06 in GRND clips.
Some antique Winchester "Match HP" in 308 were lost in the crowd as well.

What's with that Swede surplus.....

And how much we should really pay for 50 year old ammo... to shoot...or just put in a cabinet???

Now if I were rich, I would have bought them all and start buying rifles for them as well, but .....

In a perfect world (ie, the USA), it should cost about 10% the price of commercially made equivalent ammo.

Sadly, we don't live in the perfect world to the south...

That prycksytte ammunition is first class ammunition intended for target practice. I assume that you are referring to the plastic 200 round pack. 10 boxes for $15 a box isn't a give away, but this is quality ammunition, not POF .303. The cases are Berdan primed, of course.

Im of the opinion that anything more than .50 a shot is to much for surplus....even if its the good stuff like FN .303 or LC 30-06

But thats assuming a bulk buy (battle packs are kinda bulk)

The price you quoted make that ammo .75 a shot....to much (I think)

A lot of the cheap surplus ammo available in the USA can't be legally imported into Canada, because of our safety regulations.

In the USA, 8 mm German surplus is less than 10 cents per round!

I think we're being gouged up here.

On the other hand....

There are lots of stories of ammo that was imported to the US and routinely 'blew up' guns due to its piss poor consistency

That would be the Turk 8 mm, that you are refering to that goes Ka-Boom and is loaded very HOT, and not the German 8 mm.

I think it was J&G Sales in Arizona that was selling the German 8 mm 300 round battle packs not too long ago for about 7 cents a round ( ~ $17 to $21 USD, depending on quantity ordered) - Great for the guys with full auto MG34 and MG42's in the States blasting 10 rounds a second or more!:D

What is the status on 12.2 and 12.3 now-still wall hangers, and no range action?

Back to the original question: how much should we pay for surplus ammo ? If you live in Detroit or on any state bordering Canada, 7 cents a round. Cross the river and go to Windsor, 50 +++ cents a round.

About time you started buying new unprimed brass and a loading press. The case is the most expensive part of the cartridge.

You've got that one right, John.

None of the stores I've been to carry 6.5 brass .... internet is the only option, really.

I got the press, the dies... all of them.
For me, shooting the ol' 96 with milsurp ammo is something more than just putting new assembled rounds into it.

Reason? The same we take care of those rifles in the first place. A good modern action is bound to shoot better, but this is not about that kind of better. I'm likely to take the M38 moose/deer/ bear hunting this year.
The 96 will stay home though.
