How much space between stock and barrel?

Hey there,

I'm wondering what the usual "spacing" between the barrel channel and the rifle barrel generally is in a free-floating setup? Is 1/4" clearance too much? Or should you just sand down the channel until there is barely any contact between the two? What is the school of thought on this?

Thanks -Cameron

1/4" is way beyond the norm. Usually the test is a dollar bill or a business card's clearance. Shouldn't need a lot if the wood or stock is stable. Now with a plastic stock like the Savage comes with, a dollar bill's worth of clearance may not be enough as it easily bends. The aethetics are poor imo with too much clearance, although it does no harm unless you get leaves and pine needs trapped in there walking through the bush.

It depends on how flexible the barrel is and how flexible the stock is... heavy recoil causes both to flex...

A minimum of a piece of paper folded three times... with more clearance under the barrel is good. More doesn't hurt anything... too much looks ugly...
