I was looking at a few pictures of M4's and noticed some personnel have railed fore ends with fore grips, some just have the stock/plain jane fore ends. Some have ACOGS, some have irons.

Just wondering, do most soldiers go into combat with factory spec M4's?

My knowledge on this is very limited, but the Internet once told me that *some* US armed services allow their troops to run modified weapons, with permission of their CO. There are limitations, eg. they must use the supplied lower + internals, but uppers, optics, grips and stocks are often swapped. Which services exactly I can't recall.

IIRC, Canada is the opposite, officially -- no changes, period. Though there have been service personal I've met who have changed their optics with the approval (or at least, willful blindness) of their CO's.

When I went over I left my rifle as is in the rack. Before I went out the wire pers Eotech, magpul stock and front grip would go on. YMMV, a lot. As a rule, no you are not allowed to change your rifle.

In the states it is a whole different ball game. I am not that familiar, so don't take my word for gospel. Different elements have different optics and base rifles. Some have KAC rails up front issued, along with other goodies.

Maybe KevinB will be along if you are lucky and give you a break down of who has what.

Just got back about a week ago. One platoon Sgt was running an Elcan Spectre DR and a Vortex FH. I was running an EOTech on my C8. Guys were running various different grips, foregrips and some different rails. Outside the wire....really anything goes but when your back in KAF it is a different story. I deployed with the Vandoo's, 2nd tour with them. 1st tour was the same. When we took over from the RCR it was pretty much the same thing.

It depends on who you are, who your boss is, and more importantly WHERE you are. The BG RSM doesn't hang around remote strongpoints on a regular basis. What he can't see...

Glad to have you back and thank you for your service!!

We've sold a number of slings, rail systems, grips, Aimpoints and stocks to guys going over. Basically outside the wire you're good, and no mods that are "permanent".

From what I have read on the American boards about it, its unit dependend. Some dont care some are very strict.

the only thing we werent allowed to change was our optics (I used an issued eotech as I am an elcan hater) everything else was fine to switch particularly get a good quad rail vs that pos triad rail or the airsoft grip+rail on the bottom of the handguard.

About 99% of American troops OTW that are issued an M4, it already comes with a KAC quad rail, aimpoint or ACOG, IR laser, vert grip, tac light etc. Being that their weapons dont come with airsoft crap bolted on them they dont have to shell out much of their own money.
