How much $$$ to get a good starting rifle

The shoot is now just on Sunday. Bucky, please check with Cyan1de for match details.

Bummer if you can't make it but if coming out to the OK valley this summer, give me a shout.

Last year was a hoot. And a 6BR has no issues going to a mile. You just need alot of up.

Jerry are we talking about the shoot in Alberta !!!!!!!!!!! can't see Ian showing up for one day.
OKV was a great time with my 243....but now that I have the 6BR well look out rocks. We will see if thats in the cards or not.......same if you come out this was as well.

Interesting thoughts on the Factory 6BR rifles I know I would not be able to get any of my factory rifles to shoot as well.

Cheers

Bucky

Nope, the shoot in Kamloops. Bummer that they are on the same weekend.

Oh well, I will get up to Kamloops for a quick Sunday match. Hopefully, not too much rain.

Be great if you can make it into the valley and I will let you know if I head "EAST".

The odds of a 6BR dedicated F div is approximately Zero but it would have alot of strengths and would be so much fun - keep costs down but give shooters all the experience they need if they want to move to the boomers.

Good luck in AB for your match - hopefully it will not snow on you :)

I am in the process of building a gun that may be able to compete in fclass.

Savage 111 FCNS. 550.00 (Epps)
Shilen Magnum contour barrel, 6.5x55 (Mystic player). 400.00
Falcon Menace 4.5-18x56 scope. 400 (EE)

I know it is not the same as you are looking at. Certainly for the difference in cost you should be getting an excellent rifle. I am just getting into the sport so I think this should work for the first year or so. Then if I like it I will look at a more expense setup.

Daniel, I think it is reasonable to assume that most newer shooters tend to work their way up from club to provincial and then potentially to National matches. That would - quite naturally - mean that in all likelihood, they would be shooting at short and medium ranges anyway.

3 of us headed to Alberta for the 300 - 900M match this weekend will have 6BR's wth us. Awesome cartridge.

To 600m, the cartridge is almost unbeatable in the hands of a semi-skilled pilot.

FWIW, if i were king for a day, I would classify based on calibers, not FO and FTR. I would also limit the game to 6.5mm.

FTR is a great class in and of itself, with equipment being more or less equal. It then becomes a contest of skill, where the best shooter wins. This also has the challenge where you sit skill-wise relative to the other shooters. This is true in all classes, but it is the one thing that separates the brides from the bridesmaids.

When I drafted the Factory class specs for BC, I considered the TRG, PGW, SSG type rifles and thought long and hard...

I came up with a "spirit and intent" guideline that really expresses the point that the class is all about encouraging someone that hasn't dropped 5-10 grand on a rifle, more like $500. When a newcomer with an SPS or a Stevens has to shoot against a PGW or an SSG, then the spirit has been lost. Likewise, someone that has invested in a purpose-built target rifle such as the excellent Savage F-Class rifles or the Remington 40X rangemaster, then they are equipped to run with the rest of the pack, and they can be judged on their skill. In my mind, they have already made up their mind that the pursuit of precision is something to which they are already committed.

As to6BR in TR, well, We'll just have to wait and see what is left of TR in Canada in 10 years to see if there are enough people left alive to continue even holding the matches. This past weekend a miserable grumpy TR snob yelled at a couple of F-Class shooters to shut up while he was shooting. This was seen by a couple of the new shooters and commented-on. Great PR for the proliferation of that sport....

Remi, welcome to the madness! Go find some dies and components for yourself and come out to play with us.

Ian, we're blessed to have access to 900m here in NB, so Remi is quite likely to end up shooting his new rig all the way out. He isn't likly to encounter too many 6.5-284's or 7mm's though, so I think his 6br will do just fine for him.

I shoot F-open but now doing a switch to F-tr and TR. I would suggest starting with a 308 then moving up if you decide to shoot f-open.

Good news Matt, With you and Daniel to look after him, I know he will be looked after and welcomed properly to the fold!

As to the dies, Yes! Get the type S Match set, with the non-micrometer neck bushing die.

Order a .268 and a .267 titanium nitride bushing to go with it too.

Agreed. You want the micrometer adjustment on the bullet seater, it is not particularly productive on the neck sizer (so get the "Type S" changeable bushing neck sizer, which does not include micrometer adjustment).

Order a .268 and a .267 titanium nitride bushing to go with it too.

Ian I am guessing that is the "Lapua brass no-neck-turn" setup for 6BR?

BTW I am a bit out of date, how much does a set of Redding competition dies cost these days? I was shocked recently when I found out the current price of a BR-30 powder measure...

There's nothing wrong w/ the Forster seaters either, so if you happen onto a neck die, and still need a seater, you might be pleasantly surprised w/ the cost and quality of the Forster.

Yep, Lapua 6BR brass is about .0135 thick, so .0135 X 2 = .027" + .243 = .270". A .268 bushing will give good neck tension, and the .267 will allow for a future clean-up turning. The savage chamber is generous, so cleaning up too much is probably not a great idea.

I prefer not to look.... :) Been a long time since I bought any... not sure. The PITA right now is finding bushings
