How often will they try calling my references?

They werent able to reach one of my references and didn't leave a message because the voicemail recording didn't have a name on it.

This particular reference is a busy person and I don't want to ask that person to call in themselves.

How often will they try calling?

Say they call once a day (no real idea how often they call), and they miss your reference. One of my references did not get called at all, 10 days after the 28 day period. I finally convinced him to call, and my license was approved within a week.

All this does is add time to your approval. Really, it would be best to get you reference to call in when he/she has a spare 5 minutes.

It could take weeks to contact your reference if they are as busy as you say they are.
 
When I called in to do my interview, I politely asked the lady that did my interview if it would make it easier on them to have my references call in. The lady said it would be beneficial to me and she also said they (the RCMP) would only try getting in touch with a reference every 2 weeks. So, its in your best interest to get your references to call in. Promise them a cold box of beer or to help them with a renovation or whatever you can think of because the RCMP won't go out of their way to interview your references.
 
You really should have your friend call in. They might try once a day. I've read they try once then mail a letter saying "call us". That'll add another week.

Call in yourself once you're online and get your reference number. Give that to your reference.

"Hi, this is Ms. Jones. I'm calling to provide reference for Mr. Smith's firearms license application. File number ABCD-1234."

He/She'll be done in 10 minutes
 
Good advice the RCMP are busy and this is an issue near the bottom of their list so save yourself some greif and do their job for them .They will not thank you but at least you will get your permit sooner rather than much later based on the wheels of time pace the RCMP goes by.
