How secure is your precious gear?

we went up the pemberton valley deer hunting this past week and each time we left camp our camping gear was all left where we set it up including 20lbs propane tanks and gas cans, chainsaw, nice chairs and stove..... as my brother and I sat in the treestand we heard a vehicle stop at camp and shut off it's engine. 20 minutes or so go by and the truck fires up and leaves. I said to my brother I hope we didn;t just get cleaned out..... when the morning hunt was exhausted we went back to camp and everything was as we left it. A short time later we hear the rumble of a vehicle climbing the hill and a truck rolls up and stops..... a familiar face I haven't seen in a few years is grinning at me from the driver's seat. CGN's Bongobob who admitted to pulling into camp earlier and we we relieved it was him and not camp robbers LOL
Was nice to reconnect as I been wondering how he has been doing and has been mostly absent from CGN for some time now.
Got to show off a real nice big bodied buck I took on tuesday morning so that was fun hehe
22 years of hunting that spot and not a single thing stolen so maybe we are just lucky?
Have never had anyone steal my stuff on a hunting trip and hopefully never have that story to tell.

Nice to hear your experience there and about the buck.

Don't worry about it. There is nothing you can do if you run across an unscrupulous sort... there are some people that will pick up anything not tied down and others that will smash and grab at every opportunity. I think the best you can do is to not leave anything valuable visible... don't leave your Browning Citori on the front seat and your Swarovski Binos on the dash. A locked truck is far more protection that a tent camp... many that might raid a tent won't go so far as smashing the windows on a truck, but then others l have no qualms about dynamiting a safe. Don't let paranoia ruin your trip. If it happens, deal with it.

Good way to live, just do your best to keep it out of sight and then get out there. It’s just stuff, don’t let it tie you down.

Yup... it sucks being robbed... in more than four decades spending weeks to months a year in the bush, it happened twice... once it was a camp raid, stove, lanterns, propane and gas stolen... the other time it was the truck, they went in through the inside of the door judging from the scratches, stole a tool box and cleaned out the glove box and compartment between the seats but missed a wallet that was in the door handle, it matched the interior colour, so thinking it was done after dark... but c'est la vie... life goes on... both those trips were successful and we had a great time anyway... the camp raid required a 150 km round trip to the nearest town for fuel and equipment, but we didn't quit and go home. Having said that, thieves are lowlifes... and having worked with them as a career for 35 years, I have encountered far more than most.

In a similar way as you saw all too well, boats and floatplanes were the same source of anxiety being left to the elements and bears. Just have to do your best, find the high point in the sand, and then have the best night’s sleep you can. ;) Took me a long time to learn that.

The pulley system to the little mud island gave some piece of mind during those insane tides... but that is fighting Mother Nature, not thieves.

Burned and trashed isn't much of a concern where we live, but thefts are happening daily. Old gm trucks and newer fords seem to disappear and the rest are ransacked. I had nearly $1500 in tools and garments stolen from my truck shy of two years ago and the other guys parked in the yard lost a portable miller tig unit and a hundred feet of cable. recently got a topper on my truck and needing to cage in the rear glass among other things but got to playing around with a free copy of fusion and drew up a 16" wide drawer unit at full bed depth, will secure to bed. Obviously wont stop anyone determined from entry but 99% of the thefts here don't usually even involve a window break let alone prying down a locked tailgate. Peace of mind at 50% the cost of the plastic bed boxes and I can fit a majority of my tools of value. Have some kinks to work out of these with hardware but once I have them torched+bent+installed I'd be happy to share the dxf with anyone wanting them.

I was broken into while fly fishing and had some gear taken, a lot actually, but as suggested in the OP it's maybe less likely someone is going to mess around with the vehicle of an obviously armed owner. Nobody is going to worry nearly as much about a guy waving a fly rod.
