Hello, I have a 400 meter backyard with a river at the end of the land. In the spring I had a small buck 10 feet from my balcony.

Last year I have feces, fur and lots of trail as well.

Now, I bought a trail cam and put a block of salt 1 week ago with no moose trail since.

I know usually the salt must be installed at the beginning of summer when its hot but just learned I will go moose hunting 2 weeks ago :D

Any idea how to attract them bnefore the hunt begin ? I have 6 weeks before it starts here.

Thanks for any tips :)

Learn to call ;)

I've never had luck setting up a long term spot for moose.. some years they are in the same place, others not.. they move around a lot more then deer do.. never had luck with salt for moose either..

True, that. We once had a pregnant cow moose wintering on our farm, and I thought I'd be nice to her, so towards spring I gave her a block of mineralized salt and a bale of hay. She never even looked at either, but she'd stand right beside them and munch willows all day. Everything else seemed to go after the salt, but not the moose. That being said, I've watched them eat salty dirt like hogs, and even get down on their knees and gnaw it up frozen. Go figure.

They sure do like their Canola though! Leave a few swaths out in the fall, and there'll be moose down on their hands & knees all winter long sucking up every morsel.

Thanks for the help!

There are several commercial gizmos to call, if I want to use my hands is it easy to do ? Any resources to learn how to call ?

What is canola ? I only know canola oil but then can you buy that canola thingy in hunting store ?

The natural "salt" licks, where wild animals lick up the dirt, are often anything but salt! I have tasted this dirt, on more than one occasion, and couldn't detect the slightest indication of salt.
There will be other minerals in the lick the animals are after. Wild animals, and maybe domesticated animals, know when they lack a certain mineral and will try to get it.
Elk or deer would have thanked you for the hay. But hay to a moose? Yuk.

You must be out East somewhere.

Canola is a common crop in the prairies. It's the one that, when blooming, turns the whole field bright golden yellow.

It's also been called Rape, or Rapeseed. They started calling it Canola, about the same time a lot of other stuff started getting all "correct".

It's a not too distant relation to Cabbages and Brussels Sprouts, if that gives you ideas for similar seed to look for. Not something you are going to get at the sporting goods place, probably.

I have heard that they will respond by calling early in the morning just before sunrise,
so just for 4 or 5 minutes call here Moose here Moose, that should attract any Moose in your area.

We still call it Rape and it is tasty boiled with Jigs Dinner! Down my way, a sure fired way to attact Moose is put in a couple of drills of cabbage. They love the stuff, however, one moose can clean you out in a night!:)

Salt lick? Canola? Cabbage?? Pffttt....:bsFlag: ;)

It's all about putting out the right bait or attractant. I hear buffalo works VERY well!! :D

Au contraire in my neck of the woods... I have personally seen young moose feeding on fresh hay alongside cows, shortly after a rancher has dumped off a bale or two.

Also heard locally of several moose in a field feeding on fresh hay. Maybe not a staple of their diet, but they DO eat hay from time to time....
