Silly question, but I've had 2 rifles (bolt action) and a break open shotgun. They were fairly easy to clean.

I tried cleaning my pump shotgun and...there's no way to be able to push the rod in, put a piece of cloth and pull it through the barrel. I guess that's why there's bore snakes?

Also, do you guys remove the choke, clean it and re-apply anti-seize everytime you clean the shotgun? I read that if these seize up in the barrel, it can quite a pain to remove. So far, I haven't taken any chance and I have cleaned it both times I took the shotgun out.

Thanks!

David

If you look in the box the shotgun came in, you might find an owner's manual that includes everything you want to know. If you haven't got an owners manual, contacting the firearm manufacturer will result in the manufacturer sending an owners manual to you. Alternatively, if you post the make and exact model, someone will probably be able to give you an internet link to a manual specific to your shotgun.

I think he should invest in a 10 grand sonic cleaner that will do the job... are people really this lame....

I take off the barrel when I want to clean it, I put a brass brush on a rod in my drill and run it back and foreth with some solvent to get the plastic wad fouling out. I push a patch through periodically and check if it’s clean, if not I repeat the drill and brush till it’s clean. If the action is dirty I strip and detail clean, if it’s not filthy I oil the action bars and put the barrel back on.

That’s an interesting idea, using a drill. I’ll have to give it a try, thanks.

If the shotgun has a chrome plated bore, frequent bore cleaning is not needed. Regarding chokes, if properly installed, no need to remove between sessions. I think the biggest problem with binding chokes is people overtightening them - they have a very fine thread that can easily be overstressed. Finger tight is all that is needed.

I use Lucas red n tacky grease on my choke tubes as recommend by my gunsmith and its works excellent. Best part is a tub is less than 5 bucks and will last you a very long time.

After a bazillion or so rounds knock out the trigger group pins and soak the trigger group assembly in Ed's Red or kerosene overnight. Take a toothbrush to it then blast with airgun. Spray a little Fluid Film on it or even leave as is since the kerosene will lube the tight spots that you miss with the air. Done.

Well, I *do* feel dumb about asking the question. But honestly, it hadn't crossed my mind to remove the barrel to clean up the 12ga.

Now I know (tm).

Thanks everyone! Heading to YT now ;-)
