I finally got the scope that is going to stay on my 6BR and I want to cut the rifle into the flat foam of my Case Guard case like in the examples below....

Any advice on getting a nice tight fit that looks like the rifle belongs there would be greatly appreciated.

Cutting implements, guidelines on tracing/cutting.

Use an electric carving knife... Yeah, the kind Dad uses to carve the thanksgiving turkey. The kind of knife with two reciprocating blades.
'Helps if the foam is cold. Put in in the freezer for a while prior to cutting.

It's easy.

I arranged the rifle(s) on top of the the foam that was to be cut AND all the accessories I wanted to carry in the case (mags, cleaning rod, tools etc.) with enough space between each item to allow for appropriate cushioning.

Then, trace around each item with a 'Sharpie' - permanent magic marker.

Next, cut out all of the areas to be removed with a sharp (new blade) utility knife. Be sure to hold the knife at 90-degrees to the foam. Do the cutting on a surface you don't mind scratching/cutting. I did the cutting on an old rug in the basement.

Start with the smaller items until you get the hang of it.

You're done!!!

I travelled with mine and they survived the airport baggage handler test - no problem!!!

Good Luck - SD

If you use the electric carving knife, you don't have to bother with wetting or freezing the foam. I've done it with an Olfa knife and would recommend the electric knife. I also recommend using (lightly) chalk for the outline.
I've looked at pricing of foam from a wholesaler, and direct from Pelican, and the Pelican replacement was cheaper -ymmv.

Thanks for the tips guys....I just didn't want it looking like an epileptic in full seizure had a go at it

What case are you going to use and is there a few brand options? I might have to make a few of these with the heated wire saw and would like a decent quality case. And where are you getting the extra foam?

Cheers,
Rob

I got a Gun Guard case from WSS. Decent case for the price and it comes with the egg crate foam in the lid and 2 layers of the flat foam in the bottom.

i have used one be fore warned go to the craft store and buy one of the small onesto bring with you when you buy your foam and test it before hand as there are foams such as opel cell couch cushion fom which the hot wire cuter will not cut in most cases
