How to destroy a 25-06!

True enough, Andy, but I just tried loading my .308 snap-caps into my .25-06 and they loaded easily.

You guys are right - minimum sized cases in generous chambers and it can (and has) be successfully chambered. I simply measured a sized 308 and a sized 25/06 and got a 5 thou greater difference in the 308.

I can see if he tried to put .270 ammo, or .30-06, or ANY other long action round in there, But come on!!, how anyone, no matter how rushed or hungover, could mistake a long action round with a short one is beyond me.
Maybe Darwin screwed up on this one. These type of guys usually remove themselves from action early in life. This guys day is still coming by the sounds of it. How the hell did he get out of this one with his vision intact???

This is strange. I know of another rifle blown up the same way. Same calibers.

In the UK a gunsmith has to submit rifles to be proof-tested after they have been re-barreled. he sent in 10 rifles. All 308 target rifles. And a 25-06 hunting rifle.

When they came back, the 25-06 was blown up. The note said "Failed proof." The remains of a 308 case were in the chamber...

i've done the 308 in the 30.06 thing by accident- and if it can be done in a 30;06 , it can be done in the 25;06- lucky for me it was a brasilian mauser and probably a little well-worn- the 308 case came out looking like a long 44 rimless

That makes the third instance with those same two cartridges that I've encountered Eagleeye. The first was a 308 in a Browning single shot 25-06. Two types of ammo on the shooting bench at the same time. Both ammos in unmarked carrying bags. The rifle was completely ruined, the scope and mounts are still in orbit somewhere and the shooter lost part of his left thumb which was resting on the top of the scope after adjusting the variable feature. There's a good reason to learn proper range habits. The Browning High Wall is a relatively strong action and more or less held together but it was unserviceable for rebuild. The rising block action allowed almost all the escaping gas to be directed straight up into the eyepiece and tube of the scope and the scope and rings were torn away from the rifle along with half an inch of the guys thumb. Shooter known to have limited experience and he also was shooting his companions new rifle while the owner watched.

i can see why that worked as its not trying to force a 30 cal round down a 25cal tube. both the 30-06 and 308 are both the same sized bullet (.308).

i would never be that foolish- as it was, i had both rifles at the same time and went for the wrong pocket- i've since sold the 06 as it was redundant to have both- i also carry all the ammo in a drag bag which contains the rifle= no more pockets and the dragbag is specific and belongs only to that rifle

The 308 would have had to forced in with significant effort.

This is a nth-hand story that will enter into Gun Folklore based on some pictures and an ever-embellishing story line. I don't call BS, but I'm not about to embrace it as fact.

Get a copy of the September 2008 Man Magnum magazine (best hunting magazine in Africa), the whole story is in there. Including the firsthand account by the owner. For obvious reasons the shooter did not want to be identified. South Africa has a very "involved" hunting community, if you do something stupid like that and pose for a picture, the story will be out in a flash!

I'd be "red faced" too if I did something like that! :p

I don't get it. How the hell could anyone even attempt to do that? How could anyone be that stupid/careless/negligent etc...
Don't tell me someone did it deliberately as a test...

It would be about the same as forgetting your wallet at home, locking your keys in the house, forgetting to buy milk when you go to the store, losing the TV remote, etc. The difference of course is that nothing blows up when you lose your keys... for some people guns really are dangerous. Attention span is dwindling in our population, guns might be too dangerous for the "entertain me" generation to handle safely...
