How to embiggen my gun grips for large hands?

I have large hands, around 210mm fingertip to wrist. I find when I grab any gun the trigger ends up on my 2nd finger pad... you know, not the last bone of the finger, but instead the next bone closer to the hand. I was thinking I could add some padding on the backside of the grip and that would pull the hand back and put the trigger more on (moron? no!) the fingertip pad. would this work and what kind of padding would I use? Is this a commercially available thing or do I need to go to home depot or something lol ;)

Embiggen... lol. I think that will be my new "word of the week"

Well, a few questions have to be asked first before we can really give you good info on enlarging the grip or getting something more size appropriate...

What handgun model do you have?

What type of grips? Wood, polymer, rubber, bone, etc...

Do you need to modify your grip or could you go with an aftermarket product?

How often do you intend to use the gun, and under what conditions? (Durability might be a big factor, or maybe not at all...)

Yeah, I really like that "embiggen" as well.... :D

The trick is that you want to make the sides and back strap fuller while not making the front strap fuller as well. The idea is to embiggen the grip area towards the rear so you can obtain a better sort of reach to the trigger.

Hmmmmm....... The first though that comes to mind is custom wood grips made up by a good wood worker or wood savvy gunsmith. But you don't even know yet how much embiggening (oh look! Now it's an adverb as well!) you need, right?

One option for the time being would be some art store foam or perhaps some bicycle road bike foam rubber "cork" as used on handlebars for road bikes. The bicycle foam tape might be best since it is already tapered so it lays and builds smoothly.

The trick will be that you want to use it vertically since you don't want to build the front up in thickness, just the sides and rear. But it doesn't stay in place all that well by itself since it has some whimpy adhesive tape in a thin band along the center. But if you apply it to build the thickness and width then wrap it LIGHTLY with the fabric hockey tape you'll at least get an idea of what sort of size works for you.

Once you can come up with some dimensions you can then look into getting something more permanent made up. This could be wood grips or molded synthetic rubber composition. Then you won't get tape goo all over your hands.

In the meantime may I suggest a 2011 style gun or a Beretta 92fs? Other than the Desert Eagle, which is just plain and simply a mutant, these guns have the biggest and fattest grip size I've ever tried. It sounds like you'd still need more. But these would at least get you started.

OGRE HANDED PERSONS UNITE!!!!!

!! I have tried to think of so many ways to make things work for me too!!! My fingertip to wrist measures 221mm and I know EXACTLY how you feel!! I can't find a pistol that feels right in my hands, unless it has the largest palmswell insert installed. And even then, it doesn't feel natural! If you come up with anything, let me know, and I will do the same for you!! Maybe a custom wood grip might work. When I finally get a pistol, I will look ingot making one, but I got screwed out of the chance this year for a pistol, so hopefully next year I can get myself one :(

After reading your post I measured my hands; and yes, they were 210mm as well!
I am reminded of an episode of "Friends" where Joey found his hand twin. I will send you pictures of my hands so you can keep them in your wallet.

Kidding, I have the same problem;I used some of that camo tape that sticks to itself but not to the gun to beef it up a bit.

If i don't embiggen my grips will my #### fall off? :eek:Custom grips would be the best solution really, if youy can get some old grips try building up with bondo so you know what fits.

I also have relatively large hands, though I don't find them OGRE like :p (205mm using your measuring technique), and I'll admit that it is a bit of an issue. My G17 wears the large back strap. My 1911's have humped main spring housings, long trigger, ect, ect. I find that a hold modification works best and does wonders. It's a slightly exaggerated hold to that than "most folks" use hence it's a "modification", but for me it's absolutely natural (now!).

The only problem that I seem to run into is my back curled thumb (RH) "can" get in the way if I have to clear the gun (auto's) quickly...practice, practice, practice.

Instead of embiggening (it's a verb) to the point of expensive customization, have you tried to modify your hold? It feels weird at first, but the more you implement it, the more natural it will become.

How's about adding a spacer behind the original grips? Easy enough to trace round and cut out.....although don't know what pistol...

I too suffer from 'ogre hands'. Ogre feet too, finding boots is a #*#@#*! I don't know what you're shooting, but I've found the largest backstrap on the M+P seems to work about best of anything I've tried. A bit of a palm swell in it, not quite perfect though. I like to shoot my Tokarevs, but with my hands I've got to grip the things carefully or the slide leaves blisters on the webbing of my thumb.

You get 50 internet points for the use of embiggen, which, as stated above, is a perfectly cromulent word. :D

I think your only solution is to get some custom wood grips or add layers of grip tape to beef it up.

You guys are funny .. :D

Forgot to mention I don't have any handguns. I have a polymer pistol grip on my 22 rifle. It's for target shooting.

I like the bicycle handle foam idea, I didn't know it comes in tape form.

I have tried a Beretta 92, I do like the largeness of it. That is first on my shopping list when I get a range membership...

Plinker777 that is what I do with my buddy's handgun, is I modify the grip. I rotate my hands clockwise (looking from above) to pull my trigger finger back. It works but a little awkward

I will look for some tape-on foam and then maybe something more permanent like wood or rubber after I determine what shape works best.

Thanks all

Nobody mentioned the Hogue rubber wraps?

Those only fill in on the sides and around the front. That's not what someone with oversize hands needs. Instead they want to fill in the sides and around the back strap. With a sides and front strap fill the reach to the trigger is actually shortened to where they will have trouble putting the right portion of their trigger finger onto the trigger.

But your idea does suggest an interesting option. If the sides are embiggened with overlapping vertical layers of that bicycle grip tape I mentioned and then if a stretch tube of something like a bicycle inner tube were rolled on over the tape it would form a great trial fit solution. Once the person plays around with the fit THEN they could look into some sort of custom solution that would look better.
