So I have a Stevens 200 in .223, and it seems that the lands are way deep inside that barrel. I have to load a round way out of a case to get it to touch the lands. Max listed COAL for .223 is something like 2.260 and I not sure how much further I should go. I have to load them to 2.370 to touch the lands. So my seating depth is gonna be somewhere between the 2, but when loaded at 2.37o the bullet is hardly in the case. I have loaded up a batch at 2.300 to see how they do. Anything over the 2.260 doesnt work reliably out of the mag but I dont care and I already ordered the single shot adapter. So what would you guys do.
Thanks
Mark

When I had a Savage .223 heavy barrel rifle, I loaded single shot with an AOL of 2.250". That gun loved that. I shot 75 grain Hornady Amax's.

There are several ways of determining distance to lands and it's been discussed here a few times, a search may get you to the threads. Other web sites (long range and snipers forums discuss this at length as well.).

Good luck!

try looking for ammosmith.com videos on youtube, If I recall he has a video on finding the right seating depth, it might answer a lot of questions for you.

it's a factory barrel...
The chamber of my rem700's factory barrel is so long, I cannot even dream of touching the lands with the 155gr Palmas I'm shooting LOL!

FL Resized Casing. Make a cut on each side of the neck about 1/4" with Dremel. PLace a bullet and chamber, measure, remove the bullet, repeat a couple time and average the length.

Stevens tend to have extremely long throat.

Your bullet should be at least the diameter of the bullet seated in the case.( .224 bullet should have at least .224 in the neck not counting any boat tail section)to little bullet in the case has the same effect as a long jump to the lands poor accurarcy.
