I bought a rifle a few months ago and just took the mounts off yesterday. The screws were loc-tited in and there's loc-tite under the mounts.Anyone got any idea how to get rid of the stuff without damaging the blueing. It's red loc-tite.If I put the new mounts on they wont sit as flat as they should with a film underneath them.I know it's a very light film of the stuff but I want it off anyways.
Thanks !

The website says it can only be removed with heat at a temp of 500 F and I'm not heating the rifle barrel and receiver top that much as I'm sure it'll hurt the blueing.

500 degrees melts soft solder... try a little less and it should not harm bluing or temper of the metal... it should get softer and a scraper should affect it...

I used a soldering iron on my Buckmark and it came off fine without harming the blueing. Just use a low temperature if possible.

It doesn't need to be 500F to move. It will start to soften at 300F or less.

When I was on the tools, I had to remove all sorts of loc tited nuts and bolts. There are always the ham fisted dough heads that insist on heating the parts up to where the loc tite becomes liquid.

This isn't necessary. The residual heat, retained by the components will easily keep it soft enough to spin off the barrel, as long as you have the right removal tools. Then, as mentioned, acetone will pretty much clean it up.

I really hate finding a barrel that has loc tite on it. It's messy and amateurish.

As Bearhunter said you don't need to flame it to death. I seem to recall it releases at 280 unless they've changed it. If using a torch there shouldn't be any need to apply the flame directly to the surface, just skim over it using the side of the flame until it becomes pliable enough to remove it. Steel wool works well.
