My son and I slugged through edges of bush and fields for 3-4 hours recently and never saw a single mourning dove. Is there specific types of landscape or features where these cagey bastards hide?

Millions on the way there, millions on the way home. None there though :).

Open spaces. String some decoys on a string between 2 posts/trees/whatever. They are a very social communal bird; they will see others and come to join.

I sit out on the edge of my field with 6 deoys on the fence. They will see the decoys from 300m or so, and swing by to take a look. I sit in a lawnchair in the open; just keep still. Makes for some fun pass-shooting.

lol. OK, that sounds like some fun right there. Now to find some decoys.

My buddy piked up a 6pack of inflatable photoprinted decoys from Shooter's Choice in Waterloo Ontario. They work hreat. They have a loop in the top to hang them from a string, and they have a clip on the bottom to clip onto brances:fencewire, etc...

The only drawback was the plastic was crinkles and creased even when inflated. He left them in the sun, and the plastic got soft. Then he inflated them some more and they stretched out smooth and tight. Great decoys! $22 or so for 6.
