how to identify a 1911 colt .45

Hi All
I just got a 1911 colt 45 at a good price.(not in my hot little hands yet)
How does one identify when it was made and what model (series 70,80 etc) if possible. The slide is gone and replaced with a non colt. Do serial numbers overlap for some models? I know its a pre 1990 forsure

Im new to guns still, and especially 1911s
