friends farm land is being flooded by beavers. THey've tried trapping them and destroying their dam and nothing is working.

Whats the best way to get them to show themselves to shoot them? Time of day??

I heard wrecking their damn and waiting until dusk will get them out fixing it.. good idea or is there a better way?

Shotgun, with bb or bigger, that way you actually hit them, i finish em off with my 22 after i hit em. if its a big pond a partner and canoe come in handy on really calm days you watch for a wake than paddle after them and blast them with the shotty.

thanks.. I'll try wrecking the dam in the afternoon and play the waiting game after diinner..

its a creek, not a pond so they don't have much surface area to swim in..

I've shot them with everything from .17HMR to 45/70 with hollow points, the .17 only gets quick kills with head shots while the .45/70 grinds them up. The shotgun works at closer ranges and then tends to wound as you stretch the range.

22 works for me ... destrol dam & wait .. take nice clean headshots and it's a quiet, efficeint kill. Had an old Cooey that I mounted a cheap laser sight to and zeroed it in for about 30 yards ... worked perfect in low light conditions and didn't seem to spook them.

I have a new 45/70 that I am dying to try out... maybe I'll take that out. any danger shooting at water with a centre fire though? I know there is danger no mater what the gun but I figured my 17hmr would be fine with less chance of bouncing of the water

Rip a hole in the dam and come back a couple hour's later.
I use to use a .22 and shoot them from the side between the eye and the ear.
They'd roll a couple time's and go for the big sleep.

I used to go after them every evening on our farm, shot lots with a .22 to the head, otherwise it wasn't enough gun. Switched to a 30-30 and that worked great. evening time before dusk they are active, once you see them splash they tend to go in the same direction so go down stream a bit and wait for them. The ripples are your friend, they tell you when they pop up near shore for a breath, or hang out under the logs near the edge of the bank. If you see a well used beaver trail on the bank you can trap them as well.

I agree with the person who said to destroy the dam during the day and then let them have it in the evening. .223 works great as does just about anything else. Get a good vantage point and just shoot them.
