Its an M-1 Garand. They used them in the ROTC class I was in back in high school.
That Garand will show up on Gunboards or Guns America exchange with some heroic story about the GI's life that was saved when that rifle threw itself in the path of a German 88mm shell during the Battle of the Bulge...
