I'm not happy with my stock. What would be a good material(s) to use to add strength to the forestock section of the rifle. what I had in mind is incorporating a metal file, like the one for sharpening a ax, and gluing it down with some sort of epoxy resin ( what stuff would work good on that?).... what would you use to fill the bigger cavities, so the stock doesn't weight a ton with all the excessive glue ?

a better way of doing it maybe? ( I'm sure....:) )

Thanks for your time

You don't need to use a hard metal like a file to make it stiff. All steels have the same coefficient of elasticity. Its just that with hardened steels you can bend them further before they take a set. And you'll never be bending your stock that far I hope.

Find an archer, get a couple broken carbon fiber arrows. Cut to length and glass bed them in forestock. Light and stiff, problem solved.

Find an archer....:confused:Hummm that could be a problemmmmm OH Wait... I'm an archer. if I look behind my shoulder I see at least a few dozens leftover arrows...not to mention our 4 bows in the family...
just saying so you know I'm good at something....:D Archery is probably my biggest passion.

I will give it a try....:)

@ guntech.... I like to think my stock is not as bad at it may sound. the rifle is a Sig SHR970, but not one with a McW stock... I will give it a try. it will cost me under $20.00 . if it doesn't work your advice is good.

I didn't like the hollow stock I bought for my SKS , so I filled it with spray foam :D, nice and solid feeling now. Just buy a can at a hardware store and wear the rubber gloves and tape off the stock spray it in the void a bit more than 1/2 way and wait. Let it harden and you will more likely have to cut the extra off than add more as it expands alot.

Good luck

The spray foam is good idea, but instead of the spray foam from A can as previously mentioned. I would try and get hold of A company that uses or distributes industrial spray foam. That way you can choose the density of it. I have used foam called pour foam. You can get 10 pound pour foam that can be mixed by hand and poured in the stock . pm me if you have any questions.

Canadian Tire Bondo Fiberglass resin with short strands combined with fiberglass cloth will make your stock as stiff as a steel rod.

Just a note for anyone thinking about using hardware store spray foam in a can. There are often 2 types, one that expands a lot and one that doesn't expand much. If you go this route, just make sure you get the one you want. (I think non expanding might be slightly higher density, but won't fill voids as well)
