I want to know if anyone knows why the ruger 10/22 action doesn't stay open after your last shot... it seems if you're not counting your shots (esp. on a 30 round mag) then you don't know exactly when your mag is empty and end up dry firing the last "shot". Any clues or solutions? The remington model 597 .22 action stays open after the last shot...

i think there was some aftermarket kit you can buy to make it hold open after the last shot, which includes some special mags

but the rotary mag is the reason why it wont stay open after the last shot, the bolt doesnt use the mag follower to hold open

I have heard that some old, old ones could maybe be hurt by dry firing but I have never seen proof. I myself do not believe this as I can't see Ruger releasing a gun that would be damaged by something that is inevitably going to happen. I'm always willing to change my mind if I see some proof that this can really happen. I own 2 of them right now and have owned or modded several others and I have dry fired them all without any problem. What years are you talking about so I can do some research?

i was at Bits-of-Pieces today and saw the kit i was talking about, its made by CST and the kit was $80ish dollars

extra mags are $22 or something like that

Hmmm........I thought all rim-fires were damaged by dry-firing.

Only if the hammer forces the firing pin into the back of the barrel shoulder. The 10-22 firing pin is free floating and as such usually doesn't even reach the barrels shoulder when the gun is dry fired. I dry fire mine all the time and I wouldn't do anything to damage them after all the work I have done to them.

thanks for the info... I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has encountered this... heres to hoping the dry fire is ok:D

Just take the barrel off and dry fire your gun while watching the end of the bolt where the firing pin comes out. When fired you will see that the firing pin does not even come out as far as much less well past the front of the bolt which is what it would have to do to harm it or the breach face. If it goes as far as the breach face it would cut through the rim of the round causing blow back into the receiver and that would not be good.
