I am looking to pick up an assault rifle and was wondering what would be a good first rifle. There are too:confused:   many to pick from. First I thought M-14 now Im thinking AR-15. Now Im thinking both. Are the Norinco's any good ?

Assault rifle is an anti term.. Use Black instead.. Anyways you need to first decide if you want to go restricted or Non restricted first, it will help you narrow down the choices.

Will you be assaulting anyone with it? Then don't call it an assault rifle, select-fire would be more appropriate and those are prohibited.

I was going to be really sarcastic and mean (and then I remembered that I'm a moderator and supposed to be helpful)

As the previous poster stated the term Assault Rifle is a misnomer typically used by the anti-gunner. A True Assault rifle will be select fire -- something that Canada has not allowed since Jan 1979.

Firstly you need to sit down and work out both your budget and the What and Why you want the firearm.

Service Rifle Competitions?
Hunting (thus need non-restricted and calibre restrictions can come into place)
Plinking
etc.
HomeDefence is a bad word in Canada -- so just hide that under target shooting inside 25m ;)

Once you have a goal for the use of the firearms, then you determine which matches yoru requirments and of course your budget.

Right, even though the forum says Assault rifles and SMGs ????
Either would be fine restricted or non, Im thinking of spending around $1000.00

Hehehe... He's got ya there:p
Yeah, didn't notice that.. They should redo the sub title to "Sport Utility Rifles" or somthing.. :p

For that price range I guess you could do a budget AR or somthing.. Double your price range and you would open up your choices alot. As KevinB stated, it's also going to depend where you want to shoot it, and use etc.

It will only be a range rifle. Is a Norc M-14 a good start for a build ?

Check out the Main Battle Rifle forum.

Most do not keep their M14 in stock condition and end up tinkering with it....along with becoming weird parts hoarders, collecting USGI, commercial and even normal stock Norinco parts out of fear that they will run out.

It'll take more than a pretty penny to make the M14/M305 accurate to what some want out of it...it would be more cost effective to buy a cheap bolt gun ala Rem 700 SPS or similar....it is still fun to tinker and build though.

Skullboy, and Hungry have some great stickies over in the Main Battle Rifle forum on simple/inexpensive upgrades to do to the M14 in order to significantly improve it's accuracy. As posted by Winz, it's not going to get the accuracy of some bolt guns, but I'm assuming that if you wanted that you'd be buying a bolt gun:)
If you wanted to increase your spending slightly you could get a "starter" AR. If you pick up a basic AR (flat top to allow for later upgrades as you can afford it) with some basic back up iron sights you'll be well on your way.

I think the Norinco M-14 is an excellent rifle for the money, however there are a number of drawbacks to them:
- You can get carried away quickly with the upgrades and tweeking which cost a fair amount of money if you are using quality parts. (if you don't use the higher $$$ parts, you generally have junk)
- Even the cheap commercial .308 winchester ammo is expensive, and surplus is getting harder (at least at present) to find.
- if you handload, .223 is nearly half the cost of loading .308
- out of the box, a stock AR will (should) be more accurate than the Norinco.
Considering the above, and the fact you want it for range only use, I'd start with an AR. Next question is do you want optics or irons? With a $1000 you have upwards of 90-100% of a Colt sporter A2 (large pin) which, imho, offer excellent quality of rifle for the cost on a gently used one. The A2s are carry handle/Iron sights and the large pinned lowers are looked at as the red headed step children of ARs -they can be had cheap if you look around. You can't go wrong with Colt, as long as you don't get taken to the cleaners.
A really decent one should be in the $1000 to $1200 range, depending on kit included.

Well some of us do have assault rifles and SMGs, but no noobies. So, technically, we can call it assault rifles and smgs, but someone new asking about such needs checking into the boards. LOL

East coast firearms sells AR15's for $1000.00. Is that a good deal, or should I buy a used Colt ? Also is the HBAR worth the extra money ?

You don't need big money to make the M14s/M305 accurate. It shoots pretty decently on it's own right out of the box. Maybe a FG stock and bedding, shimming the gas system, and getting a decent recoil spring guide. Less than $200.00 if you do it yourself.

To be honest I think your first thought should be what range facilities are nearby. Because if there aren't any rifle ranges that are approved for restricted firearms that narrows your choice to begin with.
