Hello
Iam about to put on a new savage prefit barrel and I am just wondering if there is a easy way to index the recoil lug? Iam sure I can get it pretty square with enough trial and error, but figured I would ask first.

Thanks

Do not worry. Unlike a Remington action, Savage has a notch in the face of the receiver and a matching key on the backside of the recoil lug. These two features keep the recoil lug square to the action body.

For just doing one trial and error will get it close enough... I have found if you put a little oil and lapping compound (120 grit) on the action face that contacts the lug and a little grease on the other side that contacts the barrel, the lug will tend to stay lined up with the action when you tighten it all together. When you first tighten it by hand, use a level on the bottom of the lug and on a corresponding flat on the action (scope base). Tap the lug lightly to rotate it and tighten everything... it is easier done than described.

if the action has a rail on top use 2 squares. one flush on the rail and the other on the bottom of the lug and line them up. then make a little reference mark somewhere.
